How important is an oil cooler on a turbo engine? Is anybody out there running a turbo car without an oil cooler?

I'm just trying to eliminate unnecessary parts and wanted to see if I could clip off the oil cooler as well. I am sending my pressurized engine oil off the oil filter to the turbos and wanted to see if I needed to put a T in to go to an oil cooler as well.

I am but i am doing it in conjuctiong with a remote filter mount and 1.5qt filter to carry as much oil as possible in the car.

I guess you could say i' paranoid of sucking the pan dry and not only blowing up a motor but a turbo aswell.

Unless the extra oil is in an accumulator, or in the oil pan, the is Zero protection in having a "larger oil filter". The oil filter is after the pump, if the oil pump looses suction, all of the hoses and filters in the world aren't going to keep that oil moving.

I've never ran one,......but I got a single turbo and my buddy has twins, and he has to run one his oil temps get way up there.. funny thing is I've never even checked mine to see how hot it gets.

Thanks for the input guys, keep it coming. For the record I would have no oil cooler at all... it's not a matter of adding another or upgrading to a larger one.

Also, my primary concern is oil temperature, not pressure or capacity.

nope, and if it does drain back to the engine, when the engine is off, it will cause the you to run even less oil in the pan. Other wise, the oil is just dead, oil is not going to "drain" into your bearings.

I never ran one for a year, but I recently decided to run one because several rows through the gears would drop the oil pressure considerably. It's being installed now along with the new motor, so I expect steadier oil pressures/temps... That's what I'm hoping.

i know bunches of people who dont run one...


...then again you can buy a fluid cooler at advanced autoparts for less than $60. for an fi build thats a drop in the bucket.

Im currently not running one, but its on the todo list. oil temps are in the 225 range with a coolant temp of 190 after a few gears down the road.

Cool, it seems like an oil cooler is needed to maintain a reasonable oil temperature if you are going to be beating on your car. The cost doesn't bother met at all, I was just looking to cut some weight, cut down on the clutter in the engine bay and free up some frontal surface area for my rad, condensor, heat exchanger, etc.

i'm thinkin this is a good idea... so would it be beneficial to mount it in between the oil return or supply on an STS kit?

If I do it, I will use the stock feed and return. There's a flange on the oil pan directly above the oil filter that can be tapped (if it's not already tapped from the factory) for a pressurized oil feed line and a return line. I would use that line to feed both my oil cooler and my turbo. My turbo will gravity drain through my oil pan and the oil cooler can drain back through the spot above the oil pan

BTW, finished my oil pan 2 weeks ago... need to get some pics up!
