Default Instructions for ATI Balancer Pinning Kit

Anyone have instructions for pinning the crank using the ATI Balancer pin kit. Is there a "Pinning the crank for dummies" book?

I pinned mine without any instructions...Just make sure that it's exactly straight when you start...

The most important part is to make sure you don't rotate the drill mandrel between drilling holes, even a little bit.

ATI (procharger) instructions THIS IS FOR PINNING STOCK BALANCER
#15 remove the harmonic balancer bolt. Do not remove balancer.
#16 Install the supplied harmonic balancer pinning tool using the supplied M16 hex bolt. Tighten the bolt to hold the tool in place and prevent spinning during the drilling process.
#17 Using the supplied 1/4" HSS drill bit, drill a hole in the crankshaft/harmonic balancer 0.800" deep from the face of the crank shaft. The hole will be centered on the o.d. of the crankshaft. Do not drill deeper than 0.800". Remove the bolt and pinning tool and set aside.
#18 Install the supplied 1/4" o.d. x 0.75" long stainless steel dowel pin in the hole and then reinstall the factory center bolt and torque to the factory specification of 40ft lbs plus and additional 120 degrees. Done

Remember this is only if you do not remove the balancer. If you removed the balancer you will have to press that to the 240 ft. lbs before you really do anything else/start pinning process.

Are you pinning an ATI Performance Products balancer or pinning the stock balancer with an ATI ProCharger kit?

Mine came with instructions, here they are:

Crank Pin Drill Fixture Kit for LS1

Part# 918993

Using ATI's crank pin drill fixture kit, you can install 1 or 2 dowel pins in the LS1 crank to eliminate the damper twist on the shaft - a must for engines used for circle track racing or supercharging!

Note: All drilling and reaming dry - no lubricants or cutting oils are necessary!

1. Remove the damper
2. Install the fixture to the crank and position 1 bushing hole for best drill access
3. Using the old crank bolt, lock the fixture to the crank so it can not move
4. Install the 11/64 bushing in the adapter and snug the holding screw
5. Using the 11/64 drill bit, drill through the crank to the center bore
6. Change the bushing to the 3/16 bushing and ream the 11/64 hole to 3/16 with one pass in and out at low RPM.
7. For a second pin at 180^, rotate the crank. Do not loosen bolt!
8. Repeat steps 4, 5, and 6 on the opposite side if you are installing 2 pins
9. Blow the outside and center bore clean of all chips before removing adapter. Then remove adapter.
10. Install the 3/16 pin , allowing it to protrude above the crank surface .093" to fit the keyway in the hub.
11. Install the damper and pull it tight to 200 ft/lbs with the old bolt
12. Install a new bolt (GM Part #12557840) with red #262 Loctite and torque the bolt to 240/250 ft/lbs.

Note: All ATI LS1 dampers have one 3/16 keyway in the hub or ATI can key your existing damper.

but you have to make sure you have a ATI super damper if your going to use the "ATI pin kit". If you have the stock damper then your going to use a different kit.

Just to be clear I am pinning the ATI SuperDamper not the stock balancer. This pin kit uses two pins that go in perpendicular to the crank snout.

BigBenz - The way I read those instruction is that the single keyway in the balancer hub will go over the pin that sticks out .093". But where does the other pin go?

You only single key the ATI balancer. A single key goes a LONG way, for ALOT of stress on the crank (huge boost) you might want to look into getting a double keyed balancer or possibly getting the crank keyed. Having the crank keyed is a strong option vs getting a double key balancer.

Yea you just use one of the pins. If your going to use both you have to have the Have a shop add a second keyway at 180 deg on the dampper. Dont use both you will be fine with one. Make sure not to break the bit. Go slow and steady. Use the old Harmonic bolt to hold the fixture on the snout. Make a mark on the bit for how deep your going to go in the crank to center. I drilled into my nice ARP bolt and broke my bit. lol but hey im a dumb ***.

The ATI only provisions for a pin at 0 and 180 degrees.

i need to do this as well. I was under the assumption that the pin was a lot longer. I thought you would drill a hole through the balancer hub and into the crank and pin it all together. But i see now that its not how you do it. So the pin will slide into the keyway on the ati hub? Im confused cause i didnt think that the keyway would even stick out enough, aka, it would bottom out on the pin before getting pressed on all the way.
