Turbo size in mm?

Turbo size in mm? Im a bit confused about when people refer to the size of their turbos in mm. Like twin 57 mm turbos or a 70 mm turbo. What is actually being refered to? Im used to refering to turbos by the actual model such as a 50 trim t04e or a gt30r ect. I hope someone can clear this up for me cause it seems only v8 applications talk about turbos like this.
