Default Single 408 turbo GTK1000(76) or S88???

I know people on here beat this quesion to death. But I was set to ordering a S88 turbo for my 408, but then the guy that's fabing it all up was telling me today that I might be better off with a GTK1000 (76) a guy was telling him about. Now, this car is primarily a track car. No radio/AC/heat, I do RARELY drive it around town, but usually just for alittle while. The engine is a forged iron block 408 w/L92 heads, single plane GM/90 elbow setup. TH350 with a brake and weight will be ~3Klbs. Anyways, this guy was saying that the worked over 76 (turbonetics) will be better than this S88. I wanted to just ask yalls opinions and see what you thought, will the 76 not run out of air with the 408 spinning roughly 6.7K-7K rpm? I'm new to the FI world and don't want to make a costly mistake. Thanks for any help!!

I'd go with the S88, you might stretch the GTK1000 thin with that many cubes.
I rather have too much turbo than not enough

LOL, decisions decisions.... I'm looking to spend around $2K for the turbo, just figured 91's and 101's were alittle out of range.

If this is a track car, definitely the 88. I'm going with a TC76 (rear mount) with my 408, but its primarily a street car/weekend car. TC76 wont be good much past 15 psi with a 408, and on the top end its running near the edge of the compressor map. Definitely stretched thin.

WOW!!! Well, I'm getting $2400 back on taxes and wanted to get the turbo and something else with it, but if spending alittle bit more would really net that much power, then I'll just have to save alittle more..lol. Not like the cars going to be done next week or anything... I've just read alot of good things about the S88 and kinda took it as the one to buy. But now that its getting closer to buying time I'm looking around alittle more. The car is like 90% track only. On a nice day I might take it out for a quick cruise, or if I'm feeling brave drive it ~40mi. to the track. But usually the car hangs out in my ac/heated shop for weeks on end...lol.

i had an s595..... that thing as absurdly large (internally larger than a 106) and weighed 98lbs....

The s491 is physically smaller and about 30lbs less.

S88 or s91 are good.

You can also go with the MT series, the 98mm is a really good buy

If I was home I'd offer to sell you my GT47-88. (never ran, fireballs old turbo) Too heavy for the wife to move around so I wouldn't be able to ship until I get home in May.

Yea, I searched the S95.....oh my god that thing is monsterous!! I'm wanting to mount it where the battery/overflow tank use to be. I'm trying to get by w/o moving the radiator or buying a custom one. It is a semi budget car, but I don't want to get cheap parts....make sense? lol. Anyways, I'll prolly endup with the S88 or S91. Why are some of the inlets smoothed to the turbine, and some are stepped? Thanks for all the input!!!

Haha, just alittle too big...lol. But anyways, my "builder" is still wanting me to go with the 76... I talked to the guy at the shop "not a sponsor" out of Lacey's Spring, Alabama and he wanted me to go with the 76 too. But every other shop and everybody else is saying S88-S91. What's the deal? Sorry just had to vent alittle, kinda aggravated...lol. Am I gonna have major problems with the 91? I mean I know the L92 heads are think decked, but if the block is o-ringed then it shouldn't be that bad right? Sorry for the additional questions, just wanting to do as much research as possible. They think the S91 will make the car slower than the GTK1000-76.... WTF?!? Thanks again.

They're obviously on drugs if they think the 91mm will slow the car down with 408 cubic inches. I'd personally do an S480 or S487. They're both way cheaper than 2 grand and will get you well into the 8's.

S88 or S91 will walk the dog on the other turbos mentioned (except the S95 and larger units)...including the S480 or the S487 which is not even in the same league. 120lbs/min and 133lbs/min versus 152lbsmin....lol.

We also have the S480's and S487's on the shelf as well. They just don't make that kind of power, but they are cheaper.

Quick Reply: Single 408 turbo GTK1000(76) or S88???
