Default restricted intercooler???

my friends car hit the dyno the other day running an F1a and a big front mount intercooler on a 408. the IATs were close to 130! and he was only seeing 12 psi at the motor (boost gage and data log) he checked the boost at the inlet of the intercooler and he saw 18-19psi at the inlet side. he pulled it off and cant see anything wrong looking into the inlet and outlet, anyone have any ideas on what is causing this big restriction and the high IATs.

I'd say his IC is too small as well. Do you know the dimensions of his intercooler?

thats a pretty big boost loss-is it an ebay i/c, or a good one?
if in fact its putting out 18 lbs boost, i dont think the at's are that high-i did some testing a few years ago, and at 18 lbs boost, the outlet temps were 330 deg., and the temps out of the i/c were 189 degs

with this size intercooler he should be seeing IATs just over ambient it was a cold day also, I believe he told me its a chinese manufactured intercooler. whats inside the intercooler that could be bad to cause this restriction?

sounds like a leak or something.to be dropping 6-7 psi from a big FMIC like that sounds odd

the IATs are extremely high though, and the tubing to the motor after the intercooler is not leaking.

Could also be a throttle restriction - he needs to check the pressure right after the FMIC as well to determine whether it's the IC or after that.

I'm going to next day Jon the intercooler off of my Camaro tomorrow, to see if it is in fact the intercooler. Mine was keeping the iat's nice and cool, and we were seeing 18 psi during the heat of the day with basically the same combination that Jon has. Bob

he mentioned that today, thats pretty awsome of you Bob, hes really bummed out about this right now. if its not the intercooler what else could it be? hes running a stock throttle body, but that cant be the issue. what do you mean by a throttle restriction? the tps showed 100% open. could it be the bypass valve? I dont see how that would cause high IATs though, maybe a boost leak or something.

for a simple pressure test run to the hardware store and pick up two PVC caps that will fit inside your silicon intercooler couplers. Then pick up some auto valve stems at a tire shop. Drill out your PVC pipe caps so the valve stems fit, one in each cap, put the caps in the intercooler couplers so its completly sealed and fill the intercooler with air, put a pressure guage on the other end. It should be obvious if you have any leaks. Be careful you dont overpressure your intercooler and blow it up, i think 10-15 psi would be safe and easily show if you have a leak. It might be a good idea to put it under a sheet of plexi glass or something just in case.

Take it to a radiator shop, and have it tested...

we got bobs personal intercooler and put it on, took the car out and made around 17psi going sideways the whole time, so we were thinking it must have been the intercooler, for the hell of it we put the other one back on and we made the same boost??? (going sideways again). so we now know that its not the intercooler, and we are pretty sure that it was 2 of the pipes coming out of the intercooler that may have been pushed too far together into the silicone coupler at an angle to each other and restricting flow causing the high IATs and low boost. Im glad its not the intercooler as im sure Bob and Jon are too. Bob, thankyou for all your help with this and im sorry if I caused you any problems posting this up before we knew what was going on for sure.
