Default Will I want to get new springs?

In two weeks I am going to be putting a rear mount turbo system on my 2k ws6. It has 70k on the clock and I was just wondering if it is necessary to put new springs on the heads. And if so, what springs? 918's or something? This turbo will only be running 5 to 6 psi tops for now. Also, at that boost with the high compression is it necessary to use an intercooler? FYI i have searched and found answers to all of my other questions so far.
Thanks in advance
Justin

An intercooler is always a good idea, and depending on how high CR might need meth also.

It is the stock 10.2 to 1. Well i think that is what stock is, but once again, this will only be 5 or 6 psi. Any idea on the springs?

Atleast 918's, that's what I have. The patriot duels would be the best.

im putting in an sts turbo in my car and i just started upgrading the valve springs to 918 because i was told anything higher than 5psi of boost on stock springs will give you valve float

Definitely a good idea to do springs, 918's would be cool. When i got my springs, the patriot dual's were not that much more than the 918's, but that was on a sponsor sale, but its something to look into!

As far as the intercooler goes, you definitely would be safer to run one, or as stated you could run a meth/water kit, as both would lower your IAT's. Also this boost stuff is / can get addicting, so you will probably want to run more and thats when the IC / better springs might be more beneficial down the road.

Good luck on the install!

My $.02

Thanks...

^ Thanks for the info dcvingv6. I think i am going to go with the 918's so i don't have to deal with twin springs and price. I am going to intercool now too.

You are most definalty correct in assuming that.

Forgot to ask this question though. Do you have to have your heads machined for the dual springs?

No sir, i ended up putting them on the 317 6.0 heads (to drop my compression a little), but nothing had to be done to the heads. The only machining i had done was to port the heads.

Hope this helps!

Thanks...

The Patriot Gold spring kit comes complete with titanium retainers, and they're really not that much more than the 918's. Bob

get duel springs, been reading alot of the 918's dropping valves and even with the redesign. i am going to swap back my dual springs on mine just for piece of mind, cheaper than buying new set of valves or pistion dont ya think?

^ Yeah, i guess the duals are worth a couple extra bucks. Dropping a cylinder would be a bummer.

The patriots are the way to go. Just installed another set Sunday on a buddy's car, and went on without an issue. Worked perfect!

How long does it take to put them on once you have the valve covers and factory springs off?

hmmm i would need to probably get some new oil seals as the ones from the 317 heads have their own base and i just noticed the patriots have a different style oil control seal. or you think it owuld work?

My vote also is to stay away from the 918's plus spending a bit more is usually worth it whether or not it is 'really needed'
