Forged LS1 build?
I am trying to find out if its possible to build a Low Compression 383-408 LS1 with forged internals and everything thing else in between. I was hoping to be able to do this with a budget around $10K for a running engine. Since I can't seem to find a nice crate engine that isn't way over priced, I've decided to look for a low mileage drop out ls1. I will be replacing my beaten lt1 in my 96 caprice and would like to replace it with a TT ls1 set up. I will take any advice that anyone has to give. I was hoping to be able to do the whole build with TT setup and all with a budget of $20K. I will be attacking this project in a few months when I get out of Iraq. PLEASE HELP.

I like using stock cubic inch ls1's but most people are wanting strokers these days. I would recommend finding a 6.0 core out of a chevy pickup & building it to a 408 with a callies/compstar rotating assembly. Hopefully you could find a machine shop near your home that has experience with these engines.
As far as the TT, I do not believe anyone makes a bolt on kit for the caprice so you would have to fab it up yourself.
Take care over there, and get home safe.

Thanks for the help. I have found out from many other forums that the ls2 engines and up are a little bit more of a pain to do a swap into the car I have. Plus my 4L60E tranny has been built to handle a significant amount of horsepower and I don't want to have to replace it if I don't have to. If I go with anything but an LS1 I will have to change my tranny. If I am not mistaken. But if I am wrong, please tell me. I have been talking to a company in Northern Virginia that said they can set me up with a TT kit for around $4k. It probably won't be the best setup ever. But I'm sure for the money it will be well worth it.

i cant speak about the auto tranny personally. but if a m6 can meet up im sure the 4l60 can. im in the process of swapping in a ls2 and its not that bad. couple different covers two wire harness extensions and make sure you get a ls2 specific cam. if your not looking for alot more cubes and yours is ok, you can use your ls1 crank in the ls2 to make a 364-365 cid. call some sponsors and see what there willing to work with you on.

Check out Bob's link above or Texas Speed & Performance(sponsor also), both have great prices and great reps on here. As far as the turbo kit give Stenod performance a call they do custom setups all the time.
