Default Stock shortblock + 11psi + novice tuner...results inside

Nothing you guys haven't seen before but I figured I would post my results.

The pics are of the dreaded #7 piston. All of the other pistons looked great.

I was surprised to see that the top of the piston wasn't damaged. I've seen pic's of other pistons that supposedly had been in engines with detonation problems and it looked like someone had a go at them with a chisel and a hammer. Was it detonation that caused the ring land failure? If so why was the top of the piston not damaged?

The rings were holding all the pieces together. There doesn't seem to be any damage done to the block. Is there any market for used LS1 blocks? The block, crank, and heads all look great. Any idea what they would sell for? I was planning on rebuilding the engine but I've decided to go back to college so I could really use the money. I already have a new 402 in the car.

sucks man. I would think that the F/S section could net you some $$$ but not a whole lot. Might cover a semester or twos worth of books.

11psi with a cam and full exhaust probably was pushing the limit of the stock shortblock. That is why I asked if it was detonation that caused the ring land failure.

I'm the one that tuned it so I haven't been blaming anyone else for it

Broken ringlands usually result in too much fuel, or just simply making too much power.

I'm curious as to why too much fuel would cause broken ringlands? I was under the impression that either detonation or running lean would cause that kind of damage. Too much fuel would would run rich and cool the intake charge and is what most recommend when tuning. Am I missing something here?

Excessive cylinder pressures + heat + lean mix + detonation = bye bye #7.

It's the Perfect Storm of engine disaster. At least you didn't crack the block.

Why is it #7? I bumped a little lean the other day and sure enough melted the 7 spark plug. I have an 8 AN feeding in to the #7 first I thought this would get rid of this issue but it didn't.

I've thought about flow mapping some injectors and putting a slightly larger one in that hole.

cant you just fine tune your individual cylinder fuel table? or is there not one in the ls1 tuning programs?

There is no way to do that with the stock computer and the tuning programs we have for these cars.
