Default How bad would this exhaust hurt me?

I've gotta quiet my car down some, its kinda nuts for street cruising. Right now I have LT's, 3" to 4" Y pipe and a 4" Magnaflow race muffler. Since a quiet 4" muffler doesn't exist, what I am thinking of doing is putting a reducer after the 4" muffler to 3" and running a single 3" over the axle to another muffler in the stock location. This would be a something like a 1 or 2 chamber flowmaster or something.

This way I could drop the 3" section for track use, but be able to shut this thing up on the street a little. Will it be too much backpressure?

I'm constantly debating the same thing. I bought some 1-7/8" ARH headers with a catted 3.5" Y-pipe, but also bought a 3.0" Magnaflow catback previous to the headers, for my next setup.

Some days I think I want to use the Magnaglow just so the car will be a tad bit closer to the quiet side, other days I think I want to get a Mufflex 3.5", Once in a while I think about just going with a bullet and dump it before the rear end.

I like the idea of running a cutout the best, but don't want to sacrifice the tune. It seems there are varying opinions on cutouts with a blower car.

In a similar dilemma myself...although noise restrictions are being imposed on me.

https://ls1tech.com/forums/forced-induction/964116-muffler.html

So....and I hope the weather improves so I can test. Im going to try and get a couple of logs of EGBP just at my collector, before my exhaust system, before and after swapping the rear mufflers.

you'd be trading of some top end for bottom end but there shouldn't be a huge difference in performance. Are you using the 6" round body? You could go with a longer or oval race muffler. that will make it quieter too.

like these:

I use the 4" oval magnaflow and its pretty damn loud

If I was street driving my car a lot I would get a 4" mufflex with the quietest chambered muffler and put a V-band clamp at the muffler inlet. That way you can just take the muffler/tailpipe off at the track in a few minutes and have an open exhaust. Thats what I used to do with the hooker cat back I used to run, they have a 3 bolt flange at the muffler and I would take the muffler/tailpipes off when I raced the car.

That 4" Magnaflow race muffler is loud I agree, but it is a race muffler, its straight through. I think the quietest muffler for 4" is the Spintech, but I also know they suck.

If this only costs me 30-40 HP its fine, can't hook on the street anyway.

I love my set-up: stock Z28 catback for NO noise on the street and dual cutouts up front to scare the kids and when I want to run all out. Been running this since 2003 and wouldn't go back.

I run a Spintech. It is quiet and very heavy (thick steel) which probably helps with the noise. I have heard some people say they
hurt power but I would think it is nominal, it looks pretty open to me, I would think maybe 5 hp or so. If it could hold back 30 or 40 maybe i need to look at getting a cut out. I won't replace it because I love it's sound, pretty subdued unless irritated then it sounds mean.

I would really like to see you do a cutout. We seen as much as 20 rwhp with a cutout on a Spintech system NA.

back on the actual subject TS6 :

-4" E cutout

-reduce it to 3" over the axle and run a stock style catback

search for used SLP dual/dual since they are quiet and flow well

Who sells a 4" cutout? Thats what I originally wanted to do, just couldn't find a 4".

F'in exhausts...

Swapped from a straight through universal Magnaflow, to one of their Turbo chambered designs, thinking it would quieten things down....

Damn thing is louder !!!!!!

I could try the Thrush chambered one......but the final outlet within the last chamber is only about 2.25" on a 3" muffler !!!!

personally what i would do is, where yours goes to 4 inch...make an exhaust shop MAKE you a 3 inch cutout cut into the side of the existing 4 inch pipe...then bolt a 3 inch electric cutout to that.....then run a 3 inch or stock catback after it...it will be quiet and perform ok but then you can open it when you wanna run it hard

I actually got a 4" from QTP today, going in the A.M. to have the exhaust shop make me a dump for it and adapt a used Hooker catback to it.

I don't know how much power the 3" catback will cost me, or how loud it'll be, but E-cutouts are worth it for the cool factor. My car with a wide open 4" exhaust is gonna be LOUD. Scary loud....

So, is there not a big concern about the tune changing when the cutout is open? I'm not a tuner, but this goes against what i've seen recommended in the past. I like the idea of running a cutout if the side effects aren't going to raise havoc with the tune.

Holy sh......

Logging pressure just after my left hand side collector.....

I'm seeing around 13psi at around 5-6000rpm !!!!!!! Havent been able to rev higher at WOT just yet !!!!

That is much much worse than I expected !!!!! Looks like I need to make a new exhaust !!
