Default Forced Inductions Turbo Stress Test

Thought you guys might like this.Buddy of mine bought a Custom Single from www.Forcedinductions.com ,For his 5.9 cummins diesel,Loved the turbo then the bad news. They where sled pulling in Tennessee 2 weeks ago,the rack in the fuel pump stuck wide open, the truck ran at 6000 rpm for 4.5 minute , while they watched as the fuel shutoff wouldn't kill it.,it ran till the motor melted 4 pistons. He called with the bad news and said the turbo was toast, after removal which it wouldn't turn at all, we found the reason, the pistons that melted has so much aluminum in the turbine housing that the buildup stoped the turbine from turning. The amazing thing is he sent the turbo for FIS and they said the only problem was the damage to the turbine and that's all that needs replaced, simply amazing that a turbo stood that.Oh and he said the head, manifold, turbo and 8 feet of the exhaust where Cherry red for at least 15 minutes after the engine finally died. Thanks FIS Turbo for the help.

There are 2 ways to kill a diesel engine stop the air going into the engine or stop the diesel. It sounds like his fuel wouldn't shut off & the motor ran away thus melting the pistons & throwing piston slag through the exhaust into the turbine.

I'm sorry for his bad luck but they do make this cool invention... it's called wire cutters. Fuel pumps need wires.

I'm pretty sure most diesels have mechanical fuel pumps....

I run a Detroit Diesel shop and we have had this happen before when oil entered the charge air system and the engine "ran away" The best bet would be to undo the charge piping and block off the air.....however.....with that said....when an engine designed to go only 2150 RPM takes off to 5000 RPM and is making 50 pounds of boost, there aren't a lot of people (thank god) that will hop in there and pull apart these items. Better to lose an engine than an arm. I have often wondered why they dont have emergency throttle blade type safetys that can be pulled to stop the air flow from entering the engine. Obviously charge air cooler or piping damage would most likely occur, but thats better than complete engine damage.

you know you could just spray a halon or c02 fire extinguisher into the engine and itll stop immediately?

Spraying a C02 extinguisher in the engine would likely cause some unhappy parts as well. Not sure about Halon.

Either way, that's one hell of a tough turbocharger. Sorry to hear about the engine BBQ though.

Guys, when you run mechanical everything...pulling fuses does nothing. No way to shut it off, other then a air valve, which is being installed on this truck now by the customer...lol. The EGT's reached over 2500!!! Melted everything including the pistons which as you can see are now attached to the turbine housing...lol

I don't think C02 would harm anything, as it would just displace the oxygen so combustion can't occur. As long as it is sprayed pre-compressor, it should work.

Even pulling the charge piping would probably cause the turbo to over rev. In those instances something is going to break period.

I guess it depends on how much gets on what. 1000*+ introduced to liquid CO2 is going to be violent. I suppose if you're sparing with it you might be okay. I've seen what it does to computer equipment at 200-220* and it's not pretty.
