Default 98 Corvette fuel gauge problem, 2 pumps?

98 Corvette gauge is erratic, there is a TSB to replace the right side sending unit. How does the system work? Is one pump just a leveling pump for the two tanks? Anyone else solve this problem without spending the $1000.00 in parts in the TSB?

Default

There is a venturi (non powered) pump in the pass side tank to balance the level in the 2.

There is a considerable amount of problems with the level sensors in these cars. They tend to oxidize/corrode & stop working properly. What you really have to determine is if the tank levels are not balanced or if the sensors are not reading correctly. Both can show the same code.

Ideally you can remove each sensor & measure the resistance throughout the operating range. Also visually you can see any pits or missing conductors on the sensor. If just dirty, a pencil eraser tends to work pretty well.
