Loud whine..

Loud whine.. Ok so after an hour or so drive when I parked the car I heard a medium to loud whine coming from the rear of the car. I can only assume it is the fuel pump. I turned off the car and then put it in the "on" position and it whined for a second and then stopped. Once I fired it up it did it again continuously. Please help me out, I have to get this fixed fast if it is a problem. Which I can only assume it is.
