Default concerned w/ new fuel pump trap door (sealing)

I just did the trap door for the fuel pump now I'm a little concerned if I ever get rear ended will it be like the Ford crown vics spilling fuel and burning the folks inside car.

any tips on sealing the cover is appresheated.

I have some black rope type stuff (shown in image), it's exactely the same stuff used on the inside front doors holding on the plastic moisture sheet.

Thanks

I'd get some kind of rubber that withstands fuel and make a gasket. Also add more screws to make sure the gasket seals.

yes I was planning on a few more screws after I put a gasket on.

do you think a tire inner tube would make a decent fuel proof gasket?

BTW awesome looking RX7 all that power 2800LBs and a rear end stronge enought to handle the power VERY NICE congrates, and thanks for the advice.

NO rubber inner tube is not fuel safe.

its not like you are patching the gas tank itself.. most don't put anything on it.. a little weatherstripping of any kind is fine.. fuel will never touch this.. not even if you flip your vehicle.

Thumbs up

What you got will work just fine, and it reusable, but here's what I did:

Put a thick bead of silicon sealant around the screw holes and around the outer perimeter of the lid/trap door. That's how I just did mine except I used rivets instead of screws, and I painted the lid/door (high temp.paint), along with where I cut the opening in the rear deck.

I also put/glued a 1" x1" x3/8" piece of closed cell foam rubber in the U shaped channel under the bottom center of the fuel pump door.

Nice job on the trap door, looks like a new stock fuel pump complete assemby?

I haven't swapped the FP yet.
?.the instructions say to turn and wiggle the 3 fuel lines then blow compressed air to remove dirt before removing how important is this ?

I don't have compressed air.

also when you removed the complete assembly was the bucket full of fuel or did you siphon it out? I'm planning on running the fuel level real low However this bucket will remain full right.

This will be my first FP swap on a F-body.

Thanks

I wouldn't worry about getting rearended and that the type of material you used to seal your trap door not being fuel resistant. The fuel if it does leak will only be in contact with the material for seconds or minutes. This is not enough time for fuel to break it down but the fire will melt it.. I just used regular engine silicone.
