Default fuel gauge/sending unit ?'s

O.k. so I just picked up a 1999 camaro z28 5.7 auto trans.
The gas gauge doesn't work stays at empty only moves when you first start it, moves to full but then right back to empty.
My friend who was a gasoline mechanic for awhile but know is diesel mechanic said that it's either the sending unit or the diode on the back of the gauge.
But he said if he remembers correctly there should be a gray wire that goes to the sending unit if you cut it an ground it out an if the fuel gauge moves to full then it's the sending unit but he/I want to confirm this be for I cut a perfect wire no reason?
Can anyone confirm this for me please?
Thanks
Lance.

Also does anyone know of a direct replacement sending unit?
NAPA says it has one for a little under $450
An Hawks has one that is supposed to be one to for $150
Anyone have any experience with either one?

google.......racetronixs.......i believe they are a sponsor here

if you have the tank out.......best way to do a fuel pump is to drop the tank IMO......might as well upgrade to the racetronixs pump and hotwire kit.......1 of the best upgrades you could EVER do !!!

If I went with the racetronixs will my gas gauge still work?
Also I only have long tube headers an k&n air intake if I run racetronixs will I be fine? (not have to worry about running rich an what not?)
Also I am planing on doing the trap door method as for replacing the sending unit is it still possible to run their kit?

the sending unit is on the bucket.........the pump has nothing to do with it.....just if you are going to have it all apart might as well upgrade the pump........rich or lean depends on the ECU not the pump........the main advantage to dropping the tank over cutting up the body is the ability to flush out the tank........and its NOT that hard to drop the tank

Well here's a little update.....did the trap door an an seen what my problem was.
A mouse had chewed through all the wires except for one (orange one) for the sending unit.
An chewed all the one for the fuel pump but all of them had like 4 wires holding them together I'm surprised the fuel pump even worked lol!!
So I went an bought new connectors/harness from NAPA (AC DELCO) an soldered/heat shrink them know all is fine with the gauges....
Know to figure out the vibrations/thud feeling from under the trans tunnel (believe it's the tranny mount)
