Sealant on threads??
I have Earl's fittings for my fuel lines.
Should I use a thread sealant on them?? Or just tighten?
I am refering to fitting to fitting and fitting to fuel rail.
New to this, and I suck at searching. Tried....didn't come up with much.
Thanks!

BUT, like said, pipe thread fittings (NPT) need sealant.
The majority of fuel rails out there are NPT. There for the AN fitting that goes into the fuel rail needs sealant.
now, -AN fittings that are an threaded, flared, etc do not need sealant.
If it says 3/8 npt seal it, if it says -8an or -6an, etc dont.

"So what type of sealant do I use for my NPT (straight thread) fuel ports?"
No such thing as straight thread NPT. Here's a site that explains:
http://www.sizes.com/materls/pipeThrd.htm
Does your AN fitting have an o-ring on the fuel rail side? If so, no sealant needed.
Many fittings that attach to fuel rails are NOT NPT and are sealed with an o-ring.
As HSV-GTS-300 said above, thread sealant on tapered threads only. Sometime the taper is subtle and you have to look twice.
I like the Permatex Hi-Temp sealant for all underhood use. Try a commercial auto parts store, because they sell large tubes for like $5 instead of paying $4.99 for those dinky tubes in the regular stores.
I like the sealant instead of the tape because the tape can clog things more easily if a piece comes off.

The plug on my fuel rail looks like a straight thread. After removing it to connect a fuel pressure gauge it started to leak. I used some gasket maker on it to seal it, but I don't know how long that will last. All of the RTV that have says not for use on parts continually exposed to gasoline. So I'm reading that I should get some thread sealer from the parts store.......and it won't permanently lock the thing in there??

You might have to use teflon tape on your an fittings. I had 2 AN fittings that were determined to leak and wouldnt stop without the teflon tape despite their 37 degree seal garbage.

No way in hell would I use teflon tape. I'd chase the threads, buy new AN fittings or something before reverting to tape. I know it can be used with no problems, but with my luck (bad) a piece would come off and clog an injector up....

I have no injectors, so its not as big of a risk for me. Worst comes to worst it would get stuck in the needle, which would be an easy fix. You just have to make sure that all of the tape is within the threads and there is no overhang. But yeah, youre right. You always run that risk.

They actually make a teflon thread sealant that does the same purpose as the tape. It wont disolve in the fuel. I havent been able to find it at any of the auto stores around here, but that would be ideal.
