Broke fuel guage?

Broke fuel guage? My fuel guage has been acting funny lately. It goes to full when I fill up then doesn't go down very much if at all. If it does then it will eventually go back up to full. What is the problem here?

I bought a fuel sending unit off of ebay it was 50 bucks shipped. My mechanic did the install...charged me 45. I believe you have to drop the exhaust, and the rear end...then pull out the gas tank and install the new sending unit. I got previously quoted at a dealer for 1100 and that includes parts and labor. I suggest you look on the internet for a slightly used Fuel Sending Unit.
