Default Octane Question?

How much octane is safe to run in our cars, typically I run 93. Just recently a buddy of mine told me he found a place that can get us up to 117 octane. So if i was going to race and wanted a lil edge how far could I go?

The edge in going slower?
well besides going slower you will start cooking your exhaust valve and exhaust gaskets in the process.
Your O2's might go south as well.

117 sounds leaded to me...you don't want to run leaded too often in your car. You won't like what will happen (your O2 sensors at the very least will hate you).

Unless you are running some ungodly compression ratio, or a lot of the juice (or F/I for that matter), you shouldn't need much more than pump gas. Higher octane ratings mean it is harder to burn, so preignition is less likely. But if you don't need it, don't use it.

Depends on what your tune looks like...if you are running upwards of 28 or so degrees of timing, you'll need to back it off a couple of degrees on pump gas...seeing that txhorns281 tuned your car, you probably have a decent amount of timing. If you don't want to back it off, then run at least 100 octane, or as high as you can without getting into leaded gas (that would be my preference). Make sure you have the right spark plugs in as well...

Take this all with a grain of salt though...I don't run nitrous, and I don't have anything more than bolt-ons. I do all of my own tuning though, so I do know how your PCM thinks.

Thanx last time I talked to txhorns he told me this:" Last time we met up your were running 30 degrees of timing, and running 12.8-13.2ish A/F." So 100 octane would be good? How much in the tank? I'm still unclear where the a/f should be with nitrous running.

Yeah...your tune is a good N/A tune, but I'd back it off a bit on the timing and richen it up for nitrous. A lot of people run in the low 20s for timing on the juice, and fatten up the AFR to 12.0-ish at WOT. I'm not even sure 100 octane would be enough to keep everything under control on the bottle.

Safety is the key here...I wouldn't chance just throwing in some 100 octane and calling it "good." Someone with more experience is gonna have to take over from here...

I always throw 100 unleaded in it at the track on the warmer days...Just a precaution to keep it from pulling timing...If you're spraying and wanna keep the timing up, mix in some 100 UL and you should do ok.
