Is the pump always on when the engine is on, and if so is it always on at the same speed? It would seem like unnecessary wear on the pump to always have it on high.
What about boost a pumps, do they only up the voltage across the pump when the engine needs more fuel?

The pump is regulated with the intank regulator, they are allways on unlike some pumps that are pulse width modulated (pwm).
As for Voltage boosters, its only boosting voltage when activated, such switches that can be used are Hobbs(pressure) or a Wide open(nitrous).
