Default Backfiring....could it be a fuel problem?

When my car started missing on the highway...I thought that the fuel pump was cutting out. The car would just miss every few minutes and then finally the problem got worse and it would die with a nice loud backfire. Now, the tach will just stop working and the car won't idle right. My question is....will a fuel problem cause a backfire? I have always associated a BF with the ignition. I can't figure out what the problem is and I want to sell the car to buy a house.....I know, I know..... but I have to fill the priorities! Has anyone ever experienced these symptoms? I am at a toatl loss here. Autotap doesn't show a problem. Please help!
