I've looked at the photos XAntivenonX and a couple others have put up, but can't see the answer to my question here.

Attempted install of intank Walbro... all seemed well until I looked at the fuel sock/filter element and the end of the Walbro.
I can figure out how to make the electrical connections and the fuel connection for the pump outlet work.

I was going to re-use the old filter until I could get another.
(Shipper said they do not send a filter for '98 and up application because it is for '97 and earlier and wouldn't work.)

From what I can see, there is no inlet on the Walbro similar to what the stock pump has for the filter/sock to snap onto.

Can anyone tell me how I am supposed to do that? What am I not comprehending about putting the stock filter back on?

I bought my Walbro GSS340 fuel pump for the 98-02 LS1 from Ramchargers and it came with a length of fuel line, two worms clamps, a new filter sock and a rubber booty. It all slapped together in about five minutes.

As for the electrical connections, cut the stock connector off for the pump only, the other connector is for the tank sender. I but spliced, but it's probably better to solder with shrink tube.

I cannot even imagine what you're going through. Are you ABSOLUTELY SURE you got the right part?

I ordered the kit from New Era Performance.

There is a fuel sock in the picture. But, in the picture I don't see the 2nd hole for the return line/regulator back to the fuel sock/filter.

I asked Mike at New Era if the fuel sock came with it and he said yes.

I received the order and there was no fuel sock.

While waiting on him to reply as to why it was not there, I reached the shipper, who told me what I told you above about why they didn't ship me a sock.

Mike then confirmed what they told me.
He sugggested just re-using the old sock and said that's is what most people do. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Confused]" src="images/icons/confused.gif" />

What you see in the picure (minus the sock) is what I got (and a little round rubber gasket I don't appear to need).

the picture is the original mod.. the mustang pump kit.. since then some companes ship you what you actually need. long as the pump says gss340 on it its fine. however you are definitely supposed to have a filter with it... i doubt the stock one will fit not to mention its probably dirty.


you will need to go and get some high pressure (fuel injection hose) about a foot of it. use this in place of the squiggle peice they sent.

for the return line.. just let it hang in the breeze.. it doesnt have to go back to the filter, mine just shoots out into the tank right off the metal tube just inside the tank.

clip the plug off the pump, use the same ground as the old one did, add a connector or splice in.. then splice into the old positive wire or run a fresh one from the acessory post in the engine bay via relay to get all 14 volts instead of 12. this will improve flow as well.

once you get the right filter sent, then just pull the red cap off the pump and press the sock on.

i used a couple of stainless band clamps to hold the pump to the bracket.. put it as low as you can on the bracket. some pics in my sig may help

You will need the filter that is supposed to come with the walbro. Its a different size than the stock one. I cut and removed the stock filter (sock). Since the walbro does not have a provision for jet pump at the bottom I removed the entire pump. So now the plastic pickup has two huge inlets. I also did not use the short hose that came with the pump. I use one about twice as long, that way the bottom of pickup and pump inlet were always down at the bottom of tank. These changes will get rid of the problem with the pump starving with low fuel levels.

They could have sent the sock that fit the pump. I found a rather small one temporarily. They will send me the bigger sock I should have gotten.

Now, I have to find another o-ring to go in the quick-disconnect fitting to the supply line... the old rubber o-ring won't withstand the fuel pressure anymore. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Frown]" src="gr_sad.gif" />

Just an FYI. Mike at ERA is still telling people that the LS1 Walbro kit does not come with a Sock.

I just tried ordering a Kit and thought it was odd to hear they suddenly don't need a sock or I'm supposed to use the old one. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Roll Eyes]" src="images/icons/rolleyes.gif" />

Guess I'll pay more and order from someone else that has a kit with the sock included. No offense ERA.

They added a sock to it for me for $5 more. $104 is still cheaper than $139. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="gr_stretch.gif" />

I think they just weren't anticipating someone modding the fuel system would want a sock not designed to really fit, so didn't figure that in his low price.

You might consider the small profit margin they have at the extra five bucks for the sock and get it from them, anyway.

He never even offered the sock for the extra $5 or any further explaination than to continue saying that none of the Walbro kits for the LS1 included a sock because they won't fit and that I was SOL!.

He did make mention of a customer who bought two pumps which I assumed was you. He simply said you modified your pump somehow as though to suggest you reused your Sock or didn't use one at all. NEVER mentioned that you bought it sepeartely for $5 or that I could do the same.

Hell with that.. I bought mine from Ramchargers and paid about $12 bucks more. RC also stocks their parts where as ERA would have dropped shipped it from someone in CA. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Roll Eyes]" src="images/icons/rolleyes.gif" />
