Default Stock rear/+500whp/stickier tires...

I have a '98 T/A and I need to change my tires, my car has built motor, built 4L60, and suspension, but has stock 10 bolt rear for now and I have no traction under 60mph. I've been using street tires for fear of blowing the rear. My question is, how safe would it be to put a stickier tire in the rear such as a 275 Nitto D.R.? I need more time to gather the funds for a 9" but I need tires now and traction is an issue with normal tires.

Anyone running serious power on an automatic F-body with a stock 10 bolt on sticky tires? If so, please chime in and give some details on how it's holding up. How long before it blew? What combination of power/tires used? etc.

Check out some of LS1 SPEED's threads about his Dad's car. They were making in the 500-550rwhp range and ran a 10bolt with MT DRs for a while.

Anyone running at least Nitto D.R.'s with +500whp on a stock 10 bolt? Is that like being on borrowed time or will it hold up a bit? I have an auto so I know that should soften the hit.

you're running an auto, blew a bunch of money on everything else, next upgrade in your future is a rearend. For comparison, Our 92 Z28 had the stock rear with an auburn and 3.73's, th350 stock shortblock with AFR heads, miniram, ZZ9, and a P600B running 10.90's @124.

10 bolts will hold up to a fair amount.

That makes me feel more comfortable even though the th350 should be stronger, I have way longer gears, hopefully that will help on the hit, I don't plan to run anything stickier than a Nitto D.R. on the 10 bolt. I had Nitto D.R's on another LS1 with nitrous but it was an M6, the 10 bolt never failed me with a 150 shot. It is just so irritating to light up the tires when you just want it to grab & go.

I've been running my bone stock rear end for quite awhile now, lots of track passes with +500whp and its still going strong.

ive always read that 10 bolts in auto hold up a bit better then our M6 guys. but i think you will definitely be on borrowed time once u throw some slicks and stuff on there.

I had a stock 10 bolt with a LPW rearend girdle and stock gears. The car is full weight and made 541 rwhp. I have an aftermarket torque arm, double adjustable lowers, and lca relocaters. I ran 26x11.5x15 slicks and the car sixty footed 1.49 and went 10.85 at 125.02 mph. It was still together when I put a 9" from Midwest Chassis in it. I made about 25 passes on it. If you have a transbrake I dont think it will take it. With an ET Street it sixty footed a 1.53.

if you have stock gears and untouched then the stock 10 bolt holds up good with an auto. if you have gears in it, they put more stress the lower you go and all depends on the setup. if you set them up with tight bearing preload and use a solid shim instead of a crush sleave then they do real well. i have sprayed a 175 shot on a built lt1 car and ran well in the 10's with a 10 bolt auto. M6 well...... thats anouther story. haha
