Default 9 inch WOT "snap" sound

whenever I go WOT when I shift gears I get a loud "snapping" sound from the rear of my car. Right when the car shifts I hear a loud "snap." It sounds like someone just clapped right behind me in the backseat. Any idea what this could be? It is only on WOT shifts and car is an a4

thanks

busted transmission mount
torque arm banging the unibody
something else hitting the unibody

Cant see it being gears or it would be noisy all the time.

I don't see how it would be anything banging the body because it doesn't happen at any other time. only at a WOT shift. If it did it going over bumps then I might agree but I go over some decent potholes and I don't hear anything.

anyone else?

a member told me my rear could be skipping teeth or chipping? Is that a possibility?

I have all rod ends on my rear suspension. But im not sure if thats what im hearing. Ill take the car out again and listen. I really sounds drivetrain related not something hitting or banging, but I could be wrong. Does anyone else's car do this? Rear is a spool if it matters.

my exhaust used to do it before I got TD's it sounded like a pretty big clap from under and behind me so that could be it. Also never made a sound at all when I was driving it normal. Couldn't tell what it was until I took the old y-pipe exhaust off and never heard it again

Kinda hard to diagnose sounds over the vast silence of the internet. However, I can tell you that your mystery sound COULD be tied to your rod ends. All the adjustable rear suspension parts listed in my sig have rod ends, and they make noise. It sounds like more of a "clunk" than a "clap" though. I didn't have the noise w/ my stock suspension pieces.

I agree, it is probably your rod ends. I'd inspect them to make sure they are not worn. Bob

well yes my rod ends do make noise but it is more of a clunking. BUT the ends on my pan hard rod do need to be replaced it is just that this WOT sound im hearing is making is very different noise then the clunking sound I hear from my rod ends when going over bumps.

is it possible that under the WOT shift the rod ends are just put under a different kind of stress causing a different noise?

Bob in the history of you selling rears have you ever heard a problem like this and it ended being a poorly set up rear end? I did just get the rear in the car and I had a shop set it up so that is why it was my initial first thought.

either way I would like to rule out everything before I have to drop my rear end so ill go ahead and replace those rod ends and see if the noise goes away.

thanks guys
