Does a Locker ratchet or make noise when street driving? I was thinking this may be a cheaper option to get into a 9"

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/FORD-...Q5fAccessories

Then buy a 9" housing with 31 spline axles from Moser or Strange. Would this be a good setup for 400-425 HP that will last until it could be upgraded to a better third member? I thought any 9" posi/axle assembly would be better than the 10 bolt. Thoughts?

Do more research. A Torque-Lok is a miss spelled word in the auction (sounds like something special).
But it's a stock ford limited slip which is a Traction-Lok. It's their trade name for a clutch type limited slip differential, just like chevys Posi Traction, Mopars Sure Grip, etc.
So, it's a rebuilt stock limited slip.
Might sound appealing but they were garbage when they rolled off the assembly line. Imagine rebuilt. Might be shimmed tight, might be ok for a while. It's rebuildable but only back to **** stock specs.

I don't know why you're asking about a locker, your auction link is to a stock rebuilt limited slip.

it's not a bad deal and will get you into a 9 inch for less $ than new for sure, but the stock Ford clutch units are not that good. the new aftermarket ones with billet parts are not a bad deal(which we sell with our base package 9 inch) and are plenty strong.

the Ford design Traction Lock is similar to the Eaton unit for GM. A "locker" is most often referred to as a Detroit Locker, which is a male/female tooth design that is spring loaded and will make popping noises when turning corners. some people also have complained of abnormal steering/handling issues with the locker type diff. not that it is a bad design, but i say that it is more suited for a 4WD truck with big mud tires.

Well wouldn't any 9" posi rear be better than the stock 10 bolt I have under there now? For 400 HP any 9" has to have more of a success rate than this 10.

I guess it depends on how hard you beat it.

Slightly different rearend, but the 8.8 in 2002 GT had a stock 31 splice Trac-lok put in. With 300rwhp and 1.62 60fts, it lasted about 20-25 passes.

i ran a well rebuilt trac lock in my 9" for about a year before it went south.
they only hold so much.
heat kills them. burnouts.... track launches, etc.
if you just street drive your car and get on the gas here and there it will last a while.
regular track duty will murder it with 400whp.

What failed on it? From what I gather here it is the gear set on the 10 bolt that usually fails followed next by the carrier.

I go about 3 times a year and make about 4 passes each time. I do play around on the street some too. Do they make heavier preload springs like 800 lbs. to help with the posi unit?

10 bolt will kill a gear, this thread is all 9" stuff.
nothing failed, just the clutches in the posi wore out.

Clutch kit is $68.00 for the 9 so that wouldn't be bad once a year to go through it if nothing breaks

so you want to go through the hassle of pulling driveshaft, dropping shocks, sway bar, torque arm, pulling brakes, axles, etc, not to mention fluid costs?
youll also have to set up the rear end each time you pull it apart.
9 times out of 10, they never go back together like they come apart.
seems like a waste of time and effort to me.
you can buy a better posi setup, and not have to wrench on the car, IMO.

You could also search the "for sale" section too. You may find a decent deal. Food for thought anyway.

Which equals locker right?

My friend Tom has a standard locker in his car and has ran it for years and years without issue to this day. I called to ask him about it today and he said it may make some noise on the street though. He said in his 9 second led sled he only has a nodular case, 31 splines and Daytona support and never an issue. His reply was I don't need all that fancy stuff for what I am doing!

You have a 4" ORY and you're worried about locker noise lol.
I didn't see that before, you already have the locker silencer mod, so go for the locker.

Crazy you said that because the car pictured there was street driven and Tom said the same thing on the phone that his exhaust made it to where he never heard it. I drove around with him when it was going 9's @138 on juice and don't recall it either. Now it is a 9 all motor track car making 730 FWHP.

The 4" is pretty tame through the stock muffler thank God!

A locker isn't too bad. In my car I can barely notice it.
