Default couple of 9" gearing questions

im picking up my car i bought today, and it already has a 9" in it. it has a 4.57 spool in it. im going to be driving this car almost everyday and i dont want the spool. id also prefer some higher gearing like 3.73 or something. i had an fbody a couple years back, but never got into all of the gearing or anything crazy, just a couple bolt ons, and it was an A4 this one is going to be an M6. its an H/C/I with a thunder racing t rex cam. so i know i sound like a giant noob, but could someone point me in the right direction?

oh yeah and the axles that are in there now are 35 spline if that matters for anything.

Your only other option isto run a Detroit Locker with 35 spline axle shafts.

Well ultimately you want to run the ratio that best fits your application and setup.

Not really but alot of people with big cams that perform better at high rpms will but a big gear in it so they can get up in rpm faster.

I take it the car is a m6 if so I would go with either 3.90 or 4.10 gears. As far as the posi goes you will either need to run a locker or find someone that wants to upgrade to 35 spline axles and run spool and swap for there 31 spline axles and true trac posi

thats what i was wondering about with the cam. and well the true trac is only like $90 cheaper, so i dont think that will be worth the hassle of trying to find someone to swap everything out with.

I think you should hold off on changing anything until you have driven the car for awhile. A spool isn't near as bad as people make it out to be, and with a 6spd car I personally think they're even more "streetable" than a locker is. I had 4.56's for awhile in my 9", they were an absolute riot on the street and 70mph was just a tick over 2000rpm in 6th gear. That big cam will want at least 4.10's anyway. My $.02

i was planning on driving it for a bit, i just really dont want the spool, and figured id get new gears while im at it. but that doesnt sound nearly as bad as i thought. i was thinking the rpms would be a bit higher than that.

I agree, I'd wait and drive the car for a while. I myself prefer a spool over a locker too. Bob

lockers tend to be noisy in turns. the spool will just make the outside tire jump a little in parking lot speeds. normal driving is unchanged. i already blew out a few posi's with that set-up, hence the spool.

...oh and also, if you go with 4.10, 3.90's or 3.73's you probably will get cam surge when in overdive gears with the lower rpm's 1800-2200 at highway speeds is where you want to be...thats where the car is.

yeah, the gears arent nearly as bad as i expected, i forgot how steep 6th gear is in these cars. i was expecting the rpms to be much higher on the way home, but it wasnt bad at all. i guess ill keep the spool in it, just have to get used to the parking lot stuff.

at the strip with the 28" slicks I banged gears with gas never comming off the floor at 6800-7000. On the street anywhere you want. With the set-up on the car, the revs go by very quickly. I would say on the street anything above 4g's should be able to keep the car in the power band.

i dunno, im really getting used to the spool, but the tires in the back are kind of bald and narrow, so i guess the real test will be when i slap some DR's on back there.

tatasta: the 3.70's may work for you cause you have a baby cam compared to whats in this car, aside from that you spray. This car for it's entire life has never seen spray. I don't believe any gear in the 3.xx range will work with this set-up.
Believe me when I say I mean no disrespect either . . .
