Default Should the breather tube on differential leak?

I was wondering is it normal for the breather tube on the top of the stock 10 bolt differential to leak?. I never knew it existed until I checked my repair manual..but I have a major leak and need to know can it be replaced or could I put some rtv silicone on it?

No it shouldn't leak, I'd check the fluid level to make sure it doesn't have too much gear oil in it. Bob

Agreed it shouldn't leak but a lot of them do. They are only pressed in and the seal is mediocre at best. Especially in winter driven areas where they salt the roads

I have a thread in brass nipple from the parts house with a rubber hose attached to replace the tiny breather fitting. The hose extends upward about 10" or so then turns down an inch or two. This is what they do on trucks and SUV's. No more mess.

My 10-bolt breather tube always had gunk around it - when I went to run a breather for my 12-bolt, I used some brass fittings, a rubber hose, and a small breather tube at the top that is mounted to the frame above the housing. I've had no leaks out of it to date.
