Default Axles?

I'm needing to change and axle in my '00 Z due to a failed bearing. I have came across a full diff assembly from a '96 Z. My car has the 4ch ASR. The axle I got from the '96 also has what appears to be traction control, I only assume this because it has tone rings on the axles.

I'm needing to know if I can swap an axle shaft out of this rear into my '00 rear, but i'm not sure if they are interchangable.

I've looked up axles on summit and e-bay, and they all list '98-02 as the same. And the LT1 axles are listed differently, with several year breaks between '95-97.

So, i guess this answers my question, that they aren't interchangeable?

the tone rings are a different teeth count from the 93-97 and 98-02. the computer would probably not recognize the signal the same and turn on the abs light/disable the system. other than that, they are the same. you may be able to swap the rings from one axle set to the other.

Thank you VERY much for the reply!

I have also read during my searching that the hub on the axle is bigger on the LT1 axle. If this is so, you wouln't be able to use 98+ wheels on a '97 and earlier f-bod, i'm assuming this is B/S and the hub dia. is the same.

So, if I can get the tone ring transferred i'll be good to go then, that would be sweet!

yes the LS1 hub the studs are longer and the and the hub is longer where the LT1 has shorter stubs and shorter hub and the hub on the LT1 is a little bigger in roundness.

I had to swap back to the LT1 axles today because i put LT1 rotors and brakes on and i had clearance issues with the rotor hitting the caliper.

you can put 98+ wheels on a 93-97 but you have to shave down the inside of the wheel to get it to fit on the hub of the LT1.

I would find another LS1 axle if i were you!

hum, that explains y i always had a hard time getting that one wheel off. lol i thought that the hub had just been beat up causing the wheel to stick on it, but i guess not. (i used a 95 spare parts car axle in my 98....) so i guess the answer is yes it will work (been doing it for over a year) but you will have a small clearance issue. haha

I haven't tried it yet, just had the axle laying around and thought about using it. I went ahead and ordered an axle for my ls1 rear. I'm going to be doing gears soon and will be replacing it then.
