Default Midwest 9 vs Moser 12 bolt weight saving!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well I finally took out my Moser 12 both this weekend and thought I would weigh it and compare the weight difference between the Midwest 9. I really thought the Midwest would be heavier because I used a Moser 9 center section in the Midwest. The Moser 9 center section was 73 lbs by itself. I was surprised to see the weight difference.

****Moser 12 both with 373 gears and 33 spline axles = 203 lbs
****Midwest 9 with 35 spline gun drilled/star flange axles and Moser 9 iron
center section spool. 175lbs.

So the Midwest is 28 lbs lighter with a much heavier center section and stronger axles and housing. Midwest TQ arm is much lighter, being made of chromoloy(I forgot to weight it) vs mild steel (spohn weights 32lbs). I'll post pictures later.

^^Did you by chance weigh the tq arm?? I know mine is light as a feather. I picked up an UMI sitting at the shop the other week and oh my God that thing was like lifting weights. LOL

Sorry, that's the only thing I did not weigh. It's about half the weight just from a feel.
I just ordered my tq arm from Midwest as they have a new one out now. Should be interesting getting it installed. It's not a typical design.

You are getting part of your weight savings from gundrilled axles/star flanges on the axles which the 12-bolt didnt have.....youd see less of a diff if they were comparable axles.

A few pounds no doubt, but not a 30 pound difference.
I have a Midwest Torque arm right here and it weighs 13.5 pounds with no rod ends, so maybe add another .75 pound for those. Oh and this is the long arm for trans crossmember mounted TA's,
The aluminum center section would be a bit lighter yet. I would say 155-160, that is 10 bolt territory.

The gun drilled/star 35 spline axles (I'm guessing) are about the same weight as 33 spline axles or very close. So there's not much of a weight loss (guessing). I should have put all the parts on the scales when I purchased them.

So take away another 10 lbs for the tq arm from what I have, that about 40 lbs of total weight. Not bad!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I disagree here, they are lighter.

But the 35's are stronger, even gun drilled, so it is a moot point.

I had the center section and axles and shipped them to MidWest. They built the fab 9 housing, assembled it and shipped it back for 1500 if I remember correctly.

eric told me its about 8#s gun drilling /star flange over solids on the 35spline deal

good info cliff, what diff was in the 12bolt. On my s60 I saved 32#s going to the spoll from a truetrac. But the S60 has a HUGE diff.

Get a weight of the TA with the rod ends, jam nuts, and bolts. That stuff weights a lot, ther alot of metal in the 3/4 hardwear.
