Default Drivetrain "slop"

The drivetrain in my car feels loose. Signs of this is a clunking noise when shifting (unless I let out the clutch slowly), and there is just a general "delay" from when something happens up front and it transferring to the rear of the car. At first I was thinking it was the U-joints, but now I'm not so sure. Any ideas?

my 10 bolt did that until it finally gave out... The pinion bearings were worn... Rebuit it and it's nice and tight again.

I never found a fix for it. Theres just still some slack in it or something. No increase in the problem either.

Check the pinion... Pull it towards the transmission, if it has any slack back and forth or front to back, i'd say that may be the issue. I'd check the engine and tranny mounts too. Let us know what you find.

If the pinion or gears were causing the slop, they would be screaming at you as well. IMHO the majority of the drivetrain slop is the axle stubs where they slide into the spider gears followed by bearing slop in the M6 as a result of normal wear and tear.

I'd like to know this as well as I have the same exact problem......it's as if when I press of the gas, it doesn't respond instantly as before & has a small "delay" if you will. I've checked the driveshaft when we had it on a lift and there was some play back & forth so i'm thinking it could be that.

check your diff and tranny mount bushings.. they can be worn out, causing the clunking noise when shifting..

diff bushings...

as in the torque arm mount, the lca bushings, the pandhard bar bushings.

they're all new.'

new trans mount as well.

exccesive backlash or worn spiders or even pin wearing loose into diff? its hard to tell with the car in the air cause there going to be play.only way to check it is to remove the cover.

Mine pretty much does the same thing and has since I bought it. It has never gotten any worse and there is no gear noise. I went under my truck (Ford 8.8 and Mazda R2 5-speed) and the amount of slop that you could turn the driveshaft back and forth by hand was just about the same as with my Camaro. In the truck I can't hear any clunking, but that may be because the rear end is not under the cab, and its way farther back there.

I figured I'd just wait till something fails and get a 9", not much sense in messing with a 10 bolt. I've gotten pretty good at making sure I speed match during normal driving before engaging the clutch, and that eliminates the clunk noise. I haven't driven another F-body since I got mine so I don't know if mine is normal or not, but its lasted a while the way it is, including lots of WOT pulls (but I almost never launch hard from a dig).

Mine was doing the same thing and it started getting worse. When i accelerate hard, it starts clunking like crazy. Feels like pinion bearing or the posi letting go. Dana 60 is on order, so i'm driving it like a grandma would.

+1, axle spline slop can cause alot of undue worry about pinion bearings & gear slop. Wish the axle to differential spline tolerances were tighter. Even with a new true-trac & new axle shafts, in my Ford 8.8, the spline clearance drives me crazy sometimes; especially while moving @ parking lot speed while trying not to slip my race type clutch, .

The axle to spider tolerances on my 9" with truetrac are much tighter than the 10 bolt was. However, I am sure there was a certain amount of wear associated with the 10 bolt.

I agree with the pinion being the problem.....sounds like your back lash has changed? The bolt that is tightened to set the back lash backs off sometimes...don't ask me how i know....
