Default Making you own 9 inch

We have some 9 inch housings laying around in yard, and I was wondering who's put there own together. I'm thinking I could have the tubes cut to the length I need, and axles made then a buy a third member. I'm assuming all the brackets could be welded on from my stock rear, but really if things were this simple why haven't people been doing this? So lets here your opinions on this and maybe even from someone that has done it.

Sounds like a hell of a idea. I would try. As long as you have a good welder and know how to measure give it a shot. Then go into production, and sell them cheap.

been thinking of doing this myself! lets hear some more from you more experienced guys!

here is what i was gonna do:

Parts list: Junkyard 9", axles, bearings, hardware from 10 bolt......(feel like im forgetting something)

1. Cut housing to spec with stock rearend
2. remove hardware from 10bolt and weld to 9" housing
3. pruchase/install axles and bearings
4. purchase/install a complete 3rd memeber
5. beat the **** out of it in the TA! Lmao

Am i forgetting something? or is it really this simple? I dont want the ABS or anything. I am very good with a welder but think im forgetting some parts or something?

thats about it..you wont save a lot of money though.the only thing your gonna save on is the housing.you can buy axels and housing package from moser for like 950. plus if you sell the car you wont be able to put you 10 bolt back in.

you can find whole 3rd members for around 500 used, I don't really mind putting together a used one as long as the parts were in good condition. I think the only brand new parts you would have to buy is the axles, because you'd need a certain length..

I found a nine inch housing out of a ford truck that is 57.5 inches overall which is i 1 inch shorter on each side then stock. Making choice for drag wheels with 6.5 backspacing on a 15x10 wheel and i would run a 1 spacer for my fikse. oh and the whole rear is 100 bucks so my Q's is will the backing plates bolt up?
