Default Can i put a 3:42 in my 98z with 2:73's?

Is it possible to run a 3:42 in my 10 bolt thats currently in the car with 2:73? If so what all is needed and what company for the gear do you recommend.

thanks,

Elliott

From what I understand the 2.73 rear has a 2 series carrier while the 3.42 rears are 3 series. You can order thick cut 3.42 gears that are supposed to work with 2 series.

What I found to be cheapest was to just buy a used 10 bolt with 3.42s already in it. All I did was swap the rears out. Plus if I break the 10 bolt, I've got a complete 2.73 backup to throw in it.

You need gears for a 2 series carrier. Motive and Richmond are the only 2 I know that make them. I went with richmond. That and an install kit and your set, assuming you have all the tools to do it yourself.

you will need a "thick gear" setup. Your carrier is series 2

I know folk that have purchased a used 3.42 rear (series 3, as mentioned) and broken them almost immediately. IMHO, you are just buying someone else's problems. I run a Strange 3.42 thick gear in mine with no problems. 15k miles, 400 rwhp.

jeff, is the same with C5's? If so is it ok to use this MP GM7.5-373T

I assume the carrier in my vette is the same as ls1 fbody with the same 2.73's. For the same price I would rather have 3.73 over 3.42

i have heard that once the gears wear in then if they are swapped to another car and dont mesh exactly the same it usually doesnt turn out well. I have never installed used gears though.
