Default Noise coming from the rearend

The best way I can describe the sound is it sounds like road noise from large tires. I'm guessing the bearings need to replaced? If so, does anyone know where I can get the bearings I need. Do local part stores carry them? Thanks for any advice and yes its the factory 10-bolt.

You can buy complete rebuild kits just about anywhere. Napa etc. the full kits come with all the bearings and seals needed to rebuild the rearend.

My car sounded the exact same way. It was the carrier bearings. I replaced them and the car was fine. If your car sounded like mine then you are probably ready to get it fixed. It gave me a headache lol.

How difficult is the install of new carrier bearings? Mine makes a weird road noise at around 40-50mph.

Its not something you wanna attempt if you have never done it or seen it done before. you would need to press or cut the old bearings off and then press the new bearings back on.Other then doing that though its pretty simple.

I too Had a noise like that in my 2000 z28. Turned out to be a worn place on the axle, bearins looked fine. Did a quick fix with a repair bearing and noise went away. But really need to replace the axle. Have not found a place to pick one up without paying alot. Anyone know where to get parts like that?

I have done this twice. While it is USUALLY a carrier or pinion bearing, I've had a fubared axle do it as well.

Actually, I'm waiting on a bearing set right now.

Are there any "how to" write ups for an axle rebuild? Any experienced F-Body experts feel like making one!?

Also which kit? I need to do this too and Napa has several rear axle bearing kits

How do you diagnose which bearing it is? My noise happens when I make a right hand turn, not sure if that is the right hand side bearing or what. I thought it was my worn tires but it turns out it is not... Thanks for the help.

I thought my rearend noise was coming from worn tires cause the tires I had were, well they were past bald. I bought all new tires and the noise is still there, and its actually getting worse. It is this rythmic noise that i can hear over twenty and increases in frequency with speed.

If its a constant noise then its going to be a bad pinion bearing. The side bearings usually only make noise in a turn
