Default a4, 4.10 gears??

okay i know its a typical question, but i have a 94 lt1 firebird with a few bolt ons, and i want to put some gears in. i dont drive it a whole lot, mostly a weekend ride. no commuting, or anything. im curious about 4.10s but heard they may be a bit much with an auto trans. ill also be doing a stall and maybe a cc503 cam, with a small shot of spray. anyone use 4.10s with an auto, and if so how did they act. did you run out in the 1/4 or did it work pretty descnet. Any input would be very appreciated, thanks.

Ive got 4.11s in my car. But i also shift at 7300 so that helps me stay in drive when i go through the traps. If youre planning on running in the high 11s or so then youll be fine if youre only reving the car to the stock limiter.

I am about out of 3rd at the traps at about 115 with 3.73s. i peersonally wouldnt go with 4.10s unless it was strictly a stoplight to stoplight racer.

i also mainly run 1/8 mile because the local track is 1/8th and its like 5-10 min from my folks place. but i would like to hit a 1/4 mile on occasion. but it maybe be twice a year so not to concerned about it.

Another 3.73 vote here. I agree with 01ssreda4, you'll run out of gear if you ever plan on trapping 120+, unless you go with much taller tires.

Count me in, another vote for 3.73 gears. I have 28" tires, 3.73's, and trap about 125 MPH. I don't have much more room even with a tight converter. I had 4.10's when I first put the car together and it was too much gear. I tried a 26" tire with the 3.73's at first and the car was wound really tight at the stripe.

well for ls1 3:73's are recommended. per article ls1 dos & donts. i will eventually put in 3:42's im a little conservative. an A4 w 4:10's is alot for the street. unless you enjoy a good smoke show! cheers

Don't LT1's make more low end, therefore they need less gear?

If that's the case, I'd think 3.73's, or even 3.42's, would be good for an LT1.

I run 4.10s in my set up but with a 28" tire...Its going to all be in the combo...and how you use the car...I think generally 4.10s work very well in a n/a A4 set up...I know that I drive my car everywhere and still get 20 mpg on the highway...My ex had 4.10s in her A4 2000 SS and it was a blast to drive even with the stock 26"ish diameter tire...

Mostly track car 4.10 I guess. Mostly track and street car...3.73 are great in an auto. more highway /street /occasional track..3.42 are very nice .Combined with a good stall say a 3000 to maybe 3200 the 3.42 are again a very nice street combo that can do ok at the track. m6 cars then of course 4.10 are nice and 3.73 are also pretty nice.

Lt1 do have good torque so really 3.73 with reasonable stall like said 2800 to 3200 or so would also be a nice track/street combo.

i run 4.10s in my a4 with a 3200 rpm stall. i love the gears except for one thing....traction or should i say lack thereof. i have some nittos that are going on the car this weekend (replacing pilot sports 285 35 18).

My car now gets 15mpg city and 20ish highway.

Ok, cool thanks for the input. Now, why would i put in a 3000 or so stall in the car, isnt that about 1000 rpms into the power-band. ive been looking at cams and the power starts at like 1800-5800.(cc503) so why wouldnt you want to get one thats lower like a 2300-2500 so your actually using the power that the motor is making? not being a smart ***, just curious

i agree....even factory camm'd cars can benefit from a 3000+ converter.

I'm an A4 car with 4.10's and I daily my car everywhere including the highway. There is a chart on here somewhere that tells you what rpm your at and at what speed with a particular gearing. The difference between 3.73 and 4.10 is like a couple hundred rpm... the choice was easy for me. I have never had any traction issues with my car though I have stock suspension??? and I knew that if I didn't like the 4.10's for some reason that I could get a taller tire...which I do have to run on nitrous for traction, but normally I run a 26inch nitto DR.

The difference between the 2 is not that big so I would rather give up a tiny little extra top end for more down low and when cruising around the city in 3rd the powerband is right there...It's beatiful
