Default Bang from rear end, fluid all over the place.

I was driving down the highway on my way to work today and heard a loud bang followed by what sounded like something metal dragging underneath the car. The car still drove normally while I was pulling off an exit ramp and into a parking lot. It went into gear fine and drove smoothly.

I got under the car and there was fluid all over the bottom of the muffler. I'm assuming this is diff fluid that was shot all over everything. I have been hearing a noise from the rear recently at highway speeds, almost a grinding noise.

anyone have any idea what I did?

the noise just came on the last few days, i couldnt tell exactly what it was but i had no choice but to drive it, I have a busy work schedule. I stopped today because it sounded like it exploded, didn't really have a choice this time.

It could be any number of things:

-Ring gear bolts backed out
-Lost some teeth on the ring/pinion gears
-Carrier took a ****
-Bearing took a ****

After a secondary look at it after the fluid cleared and cooled. There is a good 1.5" crack/slash in the diff cover. I'm assuming I lost a tooth or 2 and it shot through the housing.
