Default Clunking noise from rear when shook

On a 01 Ta with about 90k miles. My freind was working on his car and for some reason he he shook the car side to side from the quater panels, and the car would make a clucnk noise. He doesnt know how long its been doing that everytime he shakes the car or reclines on it the car makes the noise. A shop told him the rear end needs to be replaced? Im sure this story might sound weird but the noise is there. lol
What are your guys opinions?

I lost the nut on the lower panhard rod bolt and it was doing the same thing. The bolt was still there but the hole is big enough for the rear to move quite a bit and it make a clunking noise as the bolt moves around. Now, if all the suspension is snug then it could be an internal problem with the rear end.
