Hi,
The following is a quote. It was taken from an old millwright book. Next time you are replacing a couple of meshed gears,check out the teeth on two gears and their relative multiples it might be interesting to see if the "modern" millwright has held to this axiom. Apparently this rule was very important for early cast iron and the old wood gears found in water and wind driven mills.
"Tooth wear: as long as the number of teeth on the bull gear is not an exact multiple of the number of teeth on the pinion the teeth won't form a wear pattern because they will always be meshing in a different pattern. There is an awful lot to know about gears and gearing. "
