Default Moser 12 bolt noise

I've got a '99 SS I just bought with a recently put in Moser 12 bolt. I've got a pretty good howl coming from it. My question is that I've heard that this normal with these rear ends, but I really have a hard time believing that. Can anyone give me a good knowledgible answer? Be much appreciated. Thanks.

I have had a similar experience with my Moser 12-bolt with 3:73 gears, 33 spline axles, True Track differential..

The noise mine made was totally unacceptable.
So I spoke with Moser tech requested the name of the tech and email contact info and then sent them a Video so that they could hear what I was experiencing.
I also contacted the vendor I purchased the rear end through to put additional pressure on them..

The tech later admitted their batch of 3:73 gears Made by U.S. Gear were showing signs of being excessively noisey..
The story I got from them was that they used to use Motive Performance gears in their 12-bolts but in order to save $ they went with a cheaper priced gear vendor U.S. Gear..

So we reached an agreement of them sending me Motive Performance Gears and everything required to do a gear change..
Along with them refunding me the cost for the gear install that is included in the price of the 12-bolt..

Mine is a 4 channel with 4.11's. You think it's worth calling, even though I'm not the one who bought or put it in?

If it isnt brand new and you are not the original owner you are SOL..
Moser keeps all of that on record when you call, you give your name and ect..

When mine was fresh out of the box, it was dead quiet, but after a few runs it developed a slight howl on decel. I haven't pulled any impressive 60' yet either.
Is yours audible on accel over the exhaust noise?

Mine is noisy under load, off gas - nothing. It's loud, and I've got some loud 3 inch exhaust with a flowmaster and you can hear it over that. But you can really only hear about 45mph or more. I'm probably going to go out and put a new gear set in and put richmonds in it and just be done. It's driving me nuts!

I bought my 12 bolt direct from Moser and I noticed 2 things with 2 different gear sets.

3.42's from Moser- After racing it a few times there was some gear noise on the decel, not accel. Kinda annoying but oh well.

I swapped out for a set of 4.10's set up by a local shop and I hear a little bit of noise on the accel, nothing on decel. The gears are quieter then what Moser did.

Noise will be standard, It maybe on part with the sound of a blown 10 bolt.

The more I hear and research these moser 12 bolts, the more i hear that they are using cheaper gears in the newer one versus other previous years. Whether there is truth to that or not, is yet to be found out. Thanks for everyone's input so far.

U.S. Gear Corporation makes the gears sets for Strange also..
Coincidently at the time I got mine I remember reading some complaints about noise with theirs also..

Mine absolutely SCREAMS when cruising from 45-65 MPH. Quiet under acceleration and deceleration all the time though. Unfortunately I do most of my driving in the noisy 45-65 zone . Mine has 4 series 3.73 Yukon gears and 30 spline axles. The pattern on the gears is beautiful too. Just gotta live with it and turn up the stereo.

That's an interesting observation, mine that howl on decel are 3.42's also. What ratio do you other guys have and when do you have the noise?

One issue with the Moser 12 bolts is the torque arm; it puts stress on the housing...thus causing the howl.

I have 4:11's with a 4 channel. What brand of gears is everyone having success with as far as strength and low noise?

I am using the 4.10 from Moser. It was loud from the minute it left my driveway including mile number 1. It aint breaking thats for sure but the level of noise is beyond my limit even for a racecar.

Is anybody switching out their gears at all? And has anyone adjusted that torque arm to see if it silences the noise?

mine was dead quiet... until i started going to the track with it. then it got a little bit louder every trip. i recently broke my gears (due to my torque arm coming loose) and had them replaced with motives.

dead quiet again... so far... but i havent been to the track with them yet.
