Default Rigging up a magnet in an aftermarket cover?

What do you guys think? I recently blew my rear end apart, and am putting it back together, but my TA cover does not have a magnet, and I would feel better if it did, even though I spent hours cleaning all this shrapnel out, there is probably more somewhere, then the material from wear and tear. Wish this thing had a magnet from the start

I picked up a round 2" magnet with a hole in it, I think its a little big, but its easy to mount. I was gonna drill/tap into the rear cover near the drain plug, there is a good amount of meat in the cover, so I don't think its much of an issue. Otherwise, I dont know what epoxies will hold up to the environment, and bond bond the magnet to aluminum, withstand the heat and oil.

Any other ideas? and i'm still running the 10 bolt if that matters.

well you surely dont want it coming loose in there. The magnet should hold to the inside of the bottom of the housing being that the housing isnt aluminum. I would suggest that or either sealing it to the cover with some Ultra Black Permatex, squishing it real good, then letting it cure for 24-48 hours. You should have to pry that thing off with a crowbar after that. Make sure you get the aluminum very clean if you go that route.

thanks guys, i'm likely to do both, screw it down and permatex it, just to be safe.

It really irks me that there is no magnet in here, i'm trying to rationalize a reason for not including it, and I just can't think of anything.

Are all aluminum covers magnet-less?

also, do you guys think a 2" diameter magnet is posibly too large?

Just put it on the bottom of the housing.

I just put one on the drain plug, and one on the fill plug too. The cover is aluminum, but those pipe-threaded plugs are most definitely not, and seem to be holding my magnets just fine.

Try a lawn mower shop, I got a 1/4 NPT plug with a magnet all ready in it and just replaced the drain plug on my TA cover with it. found it at a local mower shop cost $4.50. works great. I bought two, I just pull it out and stick in the other one quickly so I don't lose any oil then clean it, set it aside until I check it again.

Thanks guys, I like the lawnmower shop idea, or just putting a small one on the drain plug, didn't think of that.

As far as the triangle magnet, I see how it would fit in there, but I do not recall every having that. My stock rear cover had a round magnet on it, but I cannot find the old cover.

As far as placing a magnet on the bottom of the housing, I may be wrong, but wouldnt that partially magnetize the housing? probably not a big deal (especially since the housing would probably see a small fraction of magnetism compared to the magnet itself), but that may prevent some debris from making it to the magnet?

billyb, I really like your magnet, and if we can find a gm p/n for it, hopefully its cheap enough to buy and I'll use it.
I put a small pen magnet on my drainplug, and I havent checked it yet, but its pretty small, and I doubt its gonna catch much.

My car for sure does not have that magnet, don't know why.

Does your LPW girdle have a magnet? I have a TA cover that does not. The two girdles look similar enough to each other
