Default 9 inch for a A4?

I'm looking into getting rid of my stock 2.73 10 bolt and getting a 12 bolt or 9 inch 3.73 rear end. What would be a good set up for a A4? I've mostly read that people use a 12 bolt. But can you use a 9 inch?

12 bolt and a 9" are about the same price...go ahead and get the 9".

I use a Moser 9" in my A4 car. My setup is 3.50 gears, Detroit locker, 35 spline axles.

If you can handle the clunking noise of a locker, I recommend getting it.

MWC fabbed 9" in my A4 car, I went with a 3.70 gear. I wouldn't go with a higher gear than that with an A4 that sees any highway driving.

MWC 3.70's here. Like stated... about the most for doing heavy highway. 3.50's would be the best of both really

I think the consensus is that the 9" is stronger than the 12bolt but behind an auto a 12 bolt can live for a long time.

I would say go with the 9 because its easier to work on and almost bullet proof unless your a big GM loyalist.

I have had both 9" and 12 bolt IMO if you don't race a lot the 12 bolt was lighter, took less power away and gen'l fit better in regards to tq arm banging, clearancing etc.

now I hear the MWC one resolves all of that, but the price with their tq arm and such comes in pretty high

As far as saving weight strange has a 12bolt third member. I just saw this the other day, its a 12 bolt set up that has been made into a third member for a 9" claims to save 37lbs over traditional 9" third. i am looking at a 4.11 for the track.

The Moser M9 is the same weight as the 10 bolt, and the torque arm is designed to clear our floor tunnel without and interference at all. http://www.exoticperformanceplus.com...html?item=1324 Bob
