Default Rearend grinds when slowing down....

I've noticed in the past several days the sound of a grinding/howling noise coming from the rear of the car. I only hear it when I'm slowing down. Once I get back on the throttle that grinding noise goes away. I looked under the car for leaks and didn't see anything. Do you think the rearend just needs adjusting. If the rearend is low on fluid will it make that grinding noise. Also when I'm turning there isn't no clicking or any unusual noise. What do you guys think before i go get it checked?? I had the rearend rebuilt with motive gears, auburn differential and whatever else goes into it at a gm dealership about a year ago.

Did some searching but no answer on grinding noise when slowing down. I talked to some guys at work and they was thinking adjusting the shims. Does that sound right??

From what I've read, if it whines when slowing down, that has something to do with pinion preload.

Is that something a shim can take care of?? I hope it's nothing major. I'll have to take it to the dealership to get it worked on and they can be expensive.

Did it start right from the start after rebuild? If so, might be just this.

But if it was ok after rebuild and noise started later, check for a loose pinion nut. Read here on how I tightened mine after I found it loose:

In my situation, I did hear a light, low level moan when slowing, but mostly got under there due to leak. After fixing, noise/leak went away, mileage went up.

Didn't do it after the rebuild. Just started now which is about a year later. One thing i didn't do was go back after the break in period to get it checked like the mechanic told me. But i'm gettin it checked out next friday. Is it safe to drive till then or should i park it. I'll have to beg the wife for her car if so.

A wine at coast typically means the front/outer pinion bearing is going out. A loose pinion can also cause it. On coast, the natural order of things is to pull on the pinion. Too loose and the pinion head will come into contact with your carrier.

Usually caused by a crush sleeve that has been "crushed" beyond spec.

That's why most have gone to a solid spacer (crush sleeve eliminator kit) from Ratech.
