Default 4.10s or 3.73s

I have a 02 SS m6 with TSP 228R cam, with supporting mods (bolt ons) so should i stay with the stock 3.42s or move up to 3.73 or 4.10? the car will mostly be for street maybe the track once a month. Thanks

depends how much highway driving you do.
imo I would go with 3.73 I had 4.10's before and
felt they made the engine rev too much for
everyday type driving.

here is what I noticed and it might be different than other people's oppinion

with dead hooking tires like good drags or slicks.
the 3.42's were not that great and the motor
would basically bog out the gate
where as the 4.10's were nice to have

if you running basically street tires and can easily spin the tires then yes the 3.73's will be noticeable and what I would recommend.

the thing is if you put 4.10's on there
and the tires light up now with the 3.42's
like I was, you will waste the revs through wheel spin
unless you running sticky tires.

so if running sticky tires yes to 4.10's
no sticky tires go with 3.73's
makes sense to you?

Alright so i guess ill go with 3.73s makes more sense with my type of driving dont really plan to hit the strip too much, mostly roll racing

3.42.s and 3.50's are not bad gears if you running street tires. imo the only time you will see any real advantage of a 4.10 is when you got tires that are dead hooking.

I have the same question as the OP. So 4:10 gears are best for races from a dig. Now are they good for roll racing??? My guess is that 3:73's are better for rolls right???

agree, 4.10's for the same price are worth it, i drive my 02 ss maybe 2 days a week and i have ridden in a 02 ss wit 3.73's and from a dig 4.10's jump out of the whole, i messed with a guy with an audi S4 quattro, i have yokahama s-drive tires and just ripped em' out of the hole! so imo 4.10's are more satisfactery unless its a daily the the 3.73's would be more "economical"!

he is using the car for a dd and 4.10 is not for that
besides he lives in TX where everything is far to get to and again it's his dd

and like I said earlier if you don't have the traction for 4.10's you'll just waste the revs laying rubber when you gun it. so now you wasted what you were supposed to gain in quickness out the dig and lost it up top on account you running out of gear.

regular street tires + dd useage = less gear 3.73

now on the other hand if you got
315's or sticky drag rubber + non dd status,
then yes 4.10's are king.

don't forget now
In real life driving conditions majority of races are usually from a good mph roll.

I mean really, how often are you going to find yourself lining up square against someone at a red light or stop sign?
Where 4.10's are going to do you good.

Now running at the track down the quarter with a tree is an entirely different subject matter.

Another advantage not previously noted in this thread is that with 4.10s you can get into 6th gear sooner. Sure its not as efficient at 80+ mph but Im talking about day to day commuting. If, with 3.42s, you cant get into 6th until 70mph, but with 4.10s you could get in at 50mph, thats a pretty damn good deal for any speed less then 80+. I personally installed 4.10s in an M6 for a friend and he claims his city mileage is the same or better and his trips down home to see his family are still getting the same mileage per tank of gas.

I'm the friend 01ssreda4 is speaking of. I'm never going back to any ratio other than 4.10. In my opinion, Chevy should have put 4.10s in these cars from the factory. This car is my daily driver, the only vehicle I own. Work, grocery store, beer runs, friends' houses, you name it. If you have any concept of throttle feathering, i.e. you know how to drive an LS1 Camaro, then you will have no problems on the street. I run Kumho Supras on front and rear with no real traction issues.

70mph on the interstate, she's at 2,000 RPM. I drive the nearly the entire length of Louisiana, north to south, at just under 400 miles (364 to be precise) to go see my family from time to time. I arrive with an eight tank remaining.

How do I do it? It's all in the tune, folks.

4.10s = WIN

I don't mean to hijack the tread but i'm in the same boat. If I upgrade to 4.10's from stock will i loose a lot of efficiency? I have stockish tires and i do a lot of thruway driving at 70+ mph for 2 hours. Will that cost me in gas?

^^^yes it will prolly cost you some, I dont think much. But the performance difference between 3.42s and 4.10s is fantastic. Its worth every extra penny of gas.
