Difference between whine and howl.
Had my rear end rebuilt in may to cure my howling problem. Two weeks later the howl came back, so I took it back to the guy and he checked it out for play and backlash. Said everything was good and noise was my trans. Trans was just rebuilt and noise is still there. My question is what is indicative of a whine and howl? My car howls but ONLY under accel and quickly goes away after I let off. It does it at veriable speeds and gets worse or better at certain rpms. I kinda think its backlash, but I have read about the pinion nut being over/under tightened could cause this.

Yeah thats what I was wanting to know. Its going back in on thursday so I will know for sure then, I just wanted some general info on the subject. I know what gear whine sounds like as I have broke two sets of gears in my old LT1, but this is completely different. From what I have gathered it does sound like a bearing issue, which is odd because I had a complete bearing kit put in it. I also was reading about the pinion nut backing out, which would make sense for the noise reappearing two weeks after install. I dont think the bearings would be shot again in that time period. Hopefully this is the case, but either way ill know thursday.
