Default Pin yun Seal {sp}

My pinion seal is leaking a little. I was going to take it to the shop and get it fixed but the guy who dyno'ed my car said that the new seal will do the same thing unless U take the rear end totally apart. He said most places just drop the shaft and put in the new seal and put it back together.So just keep checking the fluid and you will be fine. What should I do? Get it fixed or just leave it as is and check the fluid level all the time?

There's a GM procedure for replacing the pinion seal without tearing the rear-end apart. It's not the best idea because of the crush seal as it could cause some gear whine if you get it out of spec a little, but I have had luck following the GM procedure with no problems.

I'd take it to another shop, regardless the new seal will SEAL; but if they get too crazy they could mess up your backlash/preload.

Agreed. Maybe add some "seal softener" to the oil in the diff to try to prolong it a bit. I personally don't like the seal-replacement option, unless you're willing to chance improper backlash and pinion preload. Just my $.02

If you do replace it, replace it with a GM seal.

Pinion seal weep may not be the seal's fault, if you
have a lot of driveline vibe and a little pinion bearing
play that can kick it off seat enough to weep.

If you have pinion side-play then a new seal will be
just another victim, not a cure.

When you say it's leaking a little do you mean it's puddling on the ground or you just notice that it's a little damp from seeping?

If it's not dripping on the ground the general consensus seems to be to leave it alone.

If there's a puddle on the ground then you need to do something about it. It is not necessary to rebuild the entire rear to change the seal either. I believe there's instructions in the FAQ section but not 100% sure.
