Default Question about gears and computer tuning

I am going to rebuild my 10 bolt to last me a few more seasons before I drop the $2500-$3000 on a 12 bolt. The auburn in my rear took a crap and is a one tire fire for now and all the bearings are making noise. So one of my buddies at the race track is giving me a set of 3.23 gears that he has sitting around. I was wondering if I need to get my car tuned for these gears. Basically, will putting the gears in the my car cause the trans to shift funny or shift late/early or does the gears just affect the accuracy of the speedometer? Thanks ahead of time.

Yes the gears affect the speedo. What gears did your rear end have before?

If you're rebuilding it so you can race, 3.23 is wasting your time.
If you're rebuilding it so you can drive around alot, then it's a deal.

I drive the car alot on the street and race the car 2-5 times a month in the street classes at my local track. I actually rebuilding it because my axle and pinion bearings are making noise and my auburn took a crap. So since i have a set of free gears why not throw them in and run on them for a few years.

Thanks

your car doesnt need to be tuned but the computer will need to be calibrated to the new gear ratio via a diablo sport tuner or something of the sort, a tune shop can even do it for you if you dont have a hand held tuner

Now, does it just need to be calibrated for the speed-o or for the shifting?

How much does getting it recalibrated usually cost?
