Mine sounded like an airplane turbine all the time when it was going out. Then it sounded like a machine gun shooting out grenades when it really did start to go...one loud bang and a rearview mirror later it was kaput.

Signs Signs everywhere a Sign. When I read the title my answer was simple. If it is moving, it's going bad. Most often they leak at the pinion seal and someone over tightens the nut after replacing the seal. This is followed by gear noise and then 'poof'.

It's best to just plan for it to break. My 10 bolt has no problems of any kind. The rear is quiet. But i'm ordering a 9" in the next few months. I don't want to be the guy at the track getting towed away.

I've been replacing wheel bearings in our WS6. Next is the leaky pinion seal. Any advice on how NOT to overtighten it?

Actually I was being serious.
Whining or noisy gears are not really an indicator, IMHO, that the 10 bolt is going to break. That just means that the gears are worn and require replacement. Same thing with wheel bearings or any other bearing.
If the rearend where making a bad clunking noise as a result of a broken tooth, this would be an indicator. But this is rarely the case.
There are no signs the 10 bolt is going to "break". It happens all of a sudden basically the way I stated it for the most part. Kaboom.

Even though my sig pic shows me trying to break the rear, I only did it once to get a good pic. 10 years, 85k, knock on wood.

I have been racing on mine for 3 1/2 years. It has busted 3 times, all at the track. I usually hear the teeth sheering a couple of runs before it blows. My problem has alway been when the ring and pinion go, it takes out the low sprag in the tranny....then it gets expensive
