Quiet the Rear End- How?
4.10 gears in reinforced 10-bolt. Very whiney. Had it checked by performance shop and was told it is in great shape and that is just the nature of the beast. GM Motive gears. Performs flawlessly but I'm just wondering if there are any ways to quiet the decibals making it to my ears inside.

Motive Gears = JUNK
Even oem GM gears in that low of a ratio will make noise most of the time especially once you run slicks on the car. I use to set up diffs and the GM 7.5 10 bolt is damn hard to set up quiet. Keeping it quiet is even harder.

Had 4.10 gm motives in my 97 Ta. No track runs but was really quiet ,had them in for maybe 10,000 miles. Moved them into my 99 ta and they were super noisy. Reinstalled them should maybe have swapped carrier but it wasn't possible as sold them when traded in car with it and then got them back from guy that bought car.
Tried richmond 3.73 ,even more horrible. Gave up and went back to stock. Now have dana 60.
Factory gm gears are quietest but to keep them quiet is hard with the piece of crap 10 bolt. I think it just lets things go off spec the more you hammer on it.

Thanks for all the replies guys but to be honest I'm even more perplexed now. Not just on this board but others, as well as talking to dozens of Pros, I hear the same contrasting remarks-
-GM Motive 4.10s are the best & Quietest
-GM Motive 4.10s are the worst and loudest
-Richmond 4.10s are horribly loud
-Richmond 4.10s are quieter than GM Motives
-10 Bolt rearend is junk
-12 bolt rearend is the best
-9" is the best
-10 bolt reinforced is just fine if you setup the gears right
So, where I am at this point is: My 2001 WS6 puts out 450rwhp through GM Motive 4.10s and stock rear with reinforced girdle. I will not be running the car on slicks- only on the street (and not racing it there either- just spirited jaunts when I get the itch). I love the 4.10s in every way except for the fact that they are so damned loud and whiney.
When I stumble on the 3-5K to put a 12-bolt or 9" in I will do it. Until then- is there ANYTHING at all that I can do to lessen the noise? Bottom line- is it backlash that I am hearing or some derivation thereof or is it simply the nature of the beast with my setup? Thanks again in advance all.

get a different set of gears. noise usually means they aren't set up correctly.
I had 4.11 gears in my 9". The thing whined like a banshee. Why? It wasn't set up right.
I've had my factory rear apart several times. It's quiet. Why? Set up right.
Unless you want to deal with the noise (cheapest option), look into getting it adjusted.
