Default strange 12 bolt help... swapping ls1 brakes to lt1 brakes

hey guys... i bought a used strange 12 bolt that was installed on a ls1 trans am... but im going to be using this on my 97 formula and was wondering what is going to be involved in swapping the brakes over.... i know i ahve to remove the axels which i have not yet figured out.... to my knowledge strange 12 bolts are sopposed to be set up like 9 inches with bolt on hubs... but i cant seem to get to the bolts.... and also are the ls1 backing plates pressed on and will my lt1 backing plates bolt right up in place or am i looking at some custom work with that... if anybody can shed some light on this it will greatly help me out.... thanks for any help

SAme here bro, I bought some Greg weld 93 series and they won't fit over my ground down ls1 rear calipers on my 89 camaro, so I am going to swap the rears to lt1 style.

I have a LS1 and just changed over to LT1 rear calipers... you will need to take the axles out like you said and cut the retainer ring off, the bearing & seal off and remove the backing plate and put yours on. Not sure if you have traction control but you'll need to make sure the sensor lines up right over the reluctor ring... then you'll need to use your lt1 ebrake brackets on the rear and remove the ls1 brackets. its a good bit of work... also, remember the ls1 caliper goes in front of the axle and your lt1 calipers go in the back. you can reuse your banjo bolt and brake lines from the lt1.. have fun!

yeah, you won't need the spacer. I'll pay you for shipping for your reluctor rings and sensors if your just going to toss em

oh, and yes, the bearing is pressed on. I used a grinding wheel and chisel to get mine off. Same for the retainer ring. Just be careful not to chew up the axle shaft

well just to update people... thanks troy for the shematics... i just got off the phone with strange and ordered up 2 new bearings and seals... 2 new lock rings... and get this.. .they told me that the stock back plates for the lt1 wouldnt work...so they sold me new back plates that they said will work... i hope they didnt rip me off.. but what ever.... either way... hopefully early next week i can put this axle back in... and troy when i get those reluctor wheels off ill send them and the sensors to you... hopefully the wheels dont break..... actually troy they said somthing about the lt1 plates not being resessed enough or somtihng and they stick out to far... maybe this is why your abs sensors are to short.... just a thought... ill let ya know how it goes

Yeah, the LT1 plates are thicker from STrange than the LS1 plates (hence no spacer needed) but it does throw off using the traction control/abs if you are using the sensor from a LS1. Not sure if the sensor is different for a LT1 otherwise I don't see how you can get it to work without milling it

I just need to know what the LT1 setup looks like for the backing plates to see if i can make it work with welding/cutting ect. They are cast iron, so i am trying to get an idea of what the difference is. I might have some regular backing plates off a third gen to see if i can use them.

Sweet, i would hate to have to change my wheels just because of this, but at the same time, i guess i could live with some 91/92 wheels...

I used the Strange backing plates... I guess I assumed that they'd be the same thickness as the stock LT1... Are you saying they're not??

no the stock GM plates are deff alot different from the strange ones... it seems like they are cut in towards the axle tubes more... and i dont see how you can possibly tighten the stock plates on because the bolts get ressesed in and i can only get a boxed end wrench on mine to get them off.... so i wouldnt be able to get a bite on it... i got the new bearince lock rings and back plates on and well see how it goes together tomorrow... i couldnt save the reluctor wheels troy but ill try getting the sensors off tomarrow and if they come off with out breaking (somttimes they do) ill get in touch with you... the strange back plates are worth it i think... they are cnced billet aluminum im pretty sure... because they were light as hell... and they say using the stock plates the caliper wont line up right... i wasnt about to try it... if i can go back i would have just waited and bought a axle for an lt1 car... for anybody that is wondering...
