Default Welding Axle Tubes to Housing Worth it?

Could not find much while searching. This is for a 10 bolt. I know it is not worth doing anything to but a new rear end is not an option for a while. I am just trying to make it last a little longer. Already have parts and have done or will be doing the following:
TA performance cover
Solid crush sleeve
Tru-trac locker
Upgraded axles
All new bearings and seals
Custom axle tube brace

I am going to work on this during the winter months and just wanted to know if folks really think that this is worth the effort of removing the rear end and stripping it to get it welded.

Welding tubes helps but the problem with the stock rear is the small diameter of the ring and pinion gears, the teeth get sheered off! Next could be the stock LOCKER and or an axle....
Any mod you can do to the stock rear is a band-aid some have great luck and some just

I agree. I welded the axles tubes several months ago for my son's Jeep, it will proably help in a twisting environment that his diff is likely to encounter. I haven't seen it being a problem with the 10 bolt rears, there are too many other things that go wrong first. Bob

So if I do all the mods I have listed it may become an issue if I don't weld them?

I think what they are saying is instead of upgrading your 10 bolt, to just use that money towards a 9" or 12 bolt.

I already have the parts so it is too late. I will have very little money into this rear since I got good deals on everything. I am just trying to decide whether or not welding will be worth the extra time and hasle verses the benefit.

I personally wouldnt bother with welding the tubes. Like was said, its really the small size of the parts thats in it that makes it weak.

You have the parts.
You will have to strip it anyway to install some of those parts.
Welding it will not harm it; it MAY help slightly.
If the only cost is time and effort, I would do it.
If it is a question of a significant amount of extra money, I would not do it.

$50 to $100 to weld it. I would have to remove the rear from the car and run the risk of needing to install new pinion bearings if something happens to the races when it gets welded. All rest of the parts that need to be installed can get done in the car. Thanks for the replies.

I would say NO. With the way the torque arms set up is, It puts all the torsional load on the center section, not the axles. If you had ladder bars or leaf springs, then YES it would help. There is no twisting of the axle tubes on the 3rd and 4th gens. They are just there for support of the axles and the weight of the car.

Good point. I had been asking some local experts here and they were kind of split as to if it would help or not. I agree with you now that I think about it. Probably not worth the time. Thanks.
