Default Gear guru's...check this out

Is this pitting on the tooth face normal? I just bought a used 9inch rear with only 500 miles on it...I pulled it apart and found this. It's a US gearset and currently has .010 backlash in it.

IVE NEVER SEEN IT BEFORE AS WELL, but i imagine surface irregularities like that cant be good on such a high stress part.

All most like gears got wet and rusted a little and then where used and again, and pitted the gears. Thats a guess but either way i wouldnt use them probly make noise. and gears a cheap enuff.

It will also create stress risers and probably bust a few teeth off of it.

Looks like it has been out in the weather for aa while.

The rust idea makes some sense, but the wierd thing is that the pitting is only on the coast side of the tooth...The drive side looks fine. I just wonder if the guy I bought this from had a used ring and pinion set installed when he had the rear built.

I tore the diff all apart and confirmed the pitting was from rust on the tooth surface. I looked at the pits under 10X optical zoom and you can clearly see the rust. Also found rust pitting on the pinion support bearing races.

So guess I'll be buying a new gearset.

Looks to me that the metal is pitting, maybe to lack of fluid. See that a lot in the axle shaft where the outter bearing rides when there is a lack of lube.

From the looks, there is rust on the gears. Change the gears to ensure that you don't have gear failure from the pitting and stress risers.
