Grinding during light throttle cruising
This problem has persisted since I dropped in a 3.42 rear from a 6-speed a few months ago. It was hardly noticeable at first but has gotten worse. On the highway I can hear and feel a grinding at very light throttle. It goes away if I step on the gas a little harder or if I let off completely. It has always whined a bit but the grinding is a lot more annoying to me. Any ideas as to what's going on here? I still have my original 10 bolt with 2.73 gears and 180k+ miles which worked fine, but I'd rather not have to swap it back in.

how loud is it? the one i just swapped in has a very faint "hum" when i barely touch the gas to keep speed up. happens around 50mph. Everything looked fine when I had it apart, I think these gears just make a little noise. Do you have any leaks?

No leaks. The whine is of a moderate volume while accelerating. It's really the grinding that is annoying and kinda concerning, it wasn't that loud at first and now it makes me wanna tear my hair out. I guess I'll just have my original one rebuilt with 3.42 gears and throw it back on there. Or maybe I'll try to break this one first; Hoosier DRs and a Yank SS3600 or 4000 sound like a good idea.

I had a metal on metal noise that got progressively worse. It ended up being a bad axle bearing. The axle bearings and seals are the easiest thing to replace, probably worth giving it a look.
