Default 1999 6 speed 4.10's?

My stock 10 bolt rear is starting to whine pretty bad right now, and I was wondering would 4.10's hurt my mpg bad or should I just upgrade my rear and get diff gears. Also in advance I'm new so I'm still trying to get use to the search engine so please bare with me for just a little bit, I won't be asking these noob questions too often.

Yes 4.10s will change your mpg depending on how you drive. On the highway it'll drop because your cruse rmps will be heigher. If you can afford a new rear end I would say do that and put whatever gears you want in it

You won't lose on the highway. with a 6 speed and stock gears 6th is useless. once you go 4.10's you will utilize 6th more often on the highway. I do 80mph @ 2,000rpm in 6th.

my mpg actually improved. 6th gear at 40 mph around town is great. Also im at 1800 rpm at 70, and that was better for gas for me than with the 3.42's because that seems to be the sweet spot. at 70 with 3.42's I had to change to 5th every time i hit a hill, or had to pass, while with the 4.10's its got enough oomph to just keep it in 6th.
